I’m not an Irish soda bread expert, so I’m not sure if it’s supposed to taste just like a scone.
But this one did.
It was also incredibly simple and quick. Like, you could be sitting there on a Saturday afternoon thinking, “man, I wish I had a scone right now.” And in no time you could whip up this soda bread and have a snack. Well, after it bakes for 40 minutes.
Also perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!
Many Irish soda bread recipes contain raisins. But my husband hates them and my toddler could choke on them, so I left them out. I also read somewhere that the traditional Irish bread did not contain them, so now I feel more authentic.
Recipe: Irish soda bread

- Nonstick vegetable oil spray
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 5 tablespoons sugar, divided
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 tablespoons butter, chilled, cut into cubes
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2/3 cup raisins (optional)
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick vegetable oil.
- Whisk together flour, 4 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
- Add butter, and blend using fingertips. Make sure there are no large chunks; mixture will start to resemble coarse meal.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add buttermilk. Gradually stir dry ingredients into buttermilk to blend. Add raisins if using.
- Using floured hands, shape dough into a bowl. Put onto cookie sheet and flatten slightly. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar.
- Bake bread for 40 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve warm or at room temperature.
