A humanoid mushroom

By Larissa

Although my bum knee means I won’t be running the California International Marathon on December 5, I haven’t stopped training.

Well, I haven’t exactly kept up the training I would have needed in order to complete 26.2 miles, but I’ve been running three to four days a week, typically 4 to 5 miles each time. Except for Saturdays, that is.

My sister is still planning to run the CIM on Dec. 6, which means her training has been way more intense than mine. And Saturdays, like usual, are for long runs.

Long runs for marathon training are REALLY LONG.

Running 15 to 20 miles is bad, but running 15 to 20 miles by yourself is horrible. That’s approximately three hours of your brain trying to persuade your body to stop.

So most weeks I’ve agreed to accompany my sister on her runs.

Though my knee has been feeling better each week, I haven’t pushed it past 7 miles yet.

So how to keep up?

That’s where a handy two-wheeled bicycle comes in.

The morning of our runs, we pick a route that will start with a 4 to 7 mile loop that will take us back to my house, where I can pick up the bike. We then head off, me on the bike, my sis on her feet.

Although I may not be getting a super workout, it’s nice being outside, spending a couple of hours talking with my sister.

Of course, when on a bike, a helmet is a must.

I’m not a super bicycle enthusiast, so the helmets we have aren’t the super sleek ones seen on the pros. Even so, I didn’t feel too dorky putting on the blue-hued protective gear.

Until my husband saw me.

“You look like Toadstool,” he said. “You know, from Super Mario.”

Ah, well. Better safe than cool, I guess.
