What my run has been missing: Popsicles

By Chrissy | Today's run: 0

OMG HOT.

That’s my six-letter summary of the last few days. That’s also my six-letter excuse for why I haven’t been running as much as I should.

I know it’s a pretty lame excuse, considering that Larissa was out there Saturday under that miserably hot sun, effortlessly sprinting up hills in the North County like some sort of heat-resistant Lindsay Wagner.

But running is something that Larissa’s good at. Whereas running is something that makes me barf.

I did manage to run a little bit Saturday morning. I had made plans with my friend Mona to run the Bob Jones trail at 8 a.m. Those plans were made pre-heat wave, though. So when I woke up Saturday morning and saw that it was already 70 degrees, I got a little worried. As you may recall, I don’t do well in even moderately warm weather, so I started to imagine all the ways my body would react were I to start running around in triple-digit temperatures. The amount of vomit would be horrifying, I’m sure.

So I was kind of hoping Mona would call and say, “You know, it’s pretty hot outside. Maybe instead of running we should set up some lounge chairs in the freezer section of Costco and sit around eating Popsicles all day.” To which I would respond, “You’re the best friend ever!”

Instead, Mona texted me and said she was on her way to Avila. Dang it.

Our run actually wasn’t bad, though. It was early enough that the shady parts of the trail were still nice and cool. And since Mona had just started getting back into running shape, we did intervals instead of one long, boring, sweaty, four-mile-straight run. When we got to the sunnier part of the trail near the golf course, being able to walk for a little bit definitely helped. Although, I gotta say, Popsicles would have helped more.

My latest awe-inspiring achievement

I forgot to tell you guys something! Remember a few weeks ago when Larissa announced she’d run 100 miles with Nike+? Well, I’m proud to say that I also have reached a Nike+ running milestone:

50 miles

50 miles, baby!

Looking at our running data, I see that I’ve now run approximately a third of the distance that Larissa has run and about half the distance that Danny’s run.

Watch out, guys, I’m catching up! I should be breaking 100 in a matter of … years?

My friend, Barb and I also did an horrific walk in Avila on Saturday. We are practicing for the Disneyland half-marathon this Sunday. We planned on doing 11 miles . We started out at the Park-and-Ride on Ontario Rd., took a left then went to Monty Road and looped around to the Avila Barn. It was absolutely horrible. Why? Because neither one of us had a) water, b) food, or c) money. Thank goodness at the barn we looked so miserable we begged off a cup of water and ate the snacks. All-in-all it took us 3 hours to do 8 miles (walking). We finally agreed that it was just too hot to finish the 11. (I might add that we have done up to 22 miles training for a marathon so we knew we could do it.) For once, our common sense won out.

It’s nice to know there are two other “dedicated” runners out there on the trail.

Viv, I’m really bummed that I didn’t know about the Disneyland half-marathon — that sounds fun!
