Talk Like Howard Cosell Day

howard-cosell.jpgWell, shoot. I was going to mention Talk Like a Pirate Day last week, but I was really swamped. So, well – happy belated Talk Like a Pirate Day.

But over the weekend, I started thinking about this Talk Like day idea. And then an entirely different idea came to mind:

What if, for one day, everyone talked like Howard Cosell.

I know what you’re thinking: What a great idea! And I totally agree with you.

At first I thought, well, maybe we should talk like Howard Cosell but without the accent. You know, we use own own voices but we accentuate every other line. But then when I tried to do this I realized it couldn’t be done. You can’t talk like Howard Cosell without doing the accent.

Cosell, of course, was the voice of ABC sports and Monday Night Football. (Ironically, as one of my blog posters noted, one of his most famous MNF calls was announcing the death of John Lennon.) He started out his career as an attorney, whose clients included Wille Mays.

While working as a lawyer, he did radio broadcasts of Little League games. After doing those broadcasts for free for three years, he decided to give up his legal career and become a full-time broadcaster.

Despite all his accomplishments, he’s never been honored with his own day, and I think it’s past due.

So let’s celebrate this great voice with Talk Like Howard Cosell Day this Friday, which, by the way, is also Hat Friday.

Oh yeah — and also Flair Friday.
