Cal Poly football highlights

On the same night the Cal Poly volleyball team took a step back in its quest for a third straight Big West Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the football team moved one step closer to its first postseason berth since 2005.

Great West Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week Jonathan Dally and company made quick work of North Carolina Central in a 49-3 win.

Take a look at our weekly highlight package of the football game.

And let me know what you think of the two teams. Both had high hopes and expectations to start the season. Has either one disappointed?

I enjoy the highlights and blog. Thanks for posting them.

Should be a great game this weekend and the weather looks like it will be in the mid 80’s.

The volleyball team really has me scratching my head. I was looking forward to another strong season with some of our best players in their senior year and the influx of new talent. I guess this team just didn’t gel as well as teams in the past.

Hey Scrogg, where can we go (here in San Luis) to watch Poly v. Wisconsin?

  4. Stanger Says:

    Any UC Davis highlights?

    Is anyone out there?????????????

  6. Pauly LB Says:

Good question Stanger… It seems to me that Scrogg checks the blogs maybe once per week. And really the “blog” is not a true “blog” — nothing that really warrants discussion by the readers. The only forum for trying to start a discussion regarding a new subject is to write a comment (or an email I suppose) to Scrogg and then hope that he reads it. To me the blogs overall can be improved. I have enjoyed the interviews with the football players that have been posted.

I have enjoyed the interviews. It would be nice to get some of the other seniors on here like, Restelli, Mole, Porter, Koligian, Grant, Mares……

Is anybody else concerned about our kicking situation? I mean ya we haven’t needed our kicker much fortunately, but all the rest of the games might come down to a kick and right now I’m a little worried about it!!!!

  9. Go Poly Says:

Regarding play-off games and our kicking game…most definitely a concern. The likely match-ups in the playoffs will likely boil down to field goals and our kicker is no guarantee +20 yds. Frankly our kickoff game is short as well..forcing a long field almost never happens.

I know for a fact firestone woodstocks and downtown brew will all have the game on saturday

  11. Stanger Says:

Cal Poly has actually done better on kickoffs that their opponents on average. Cal Poly has averaged 59.6 yards per kick off and their opponents have averaged 58.1 yards.

Cal Poly punters have not done great, but still better than their opponents. CP has averaged 34.7 yards (ouch), but their opponents 33.7 yards (double ouch).

Field goal kicking has been a different story and concerns me when the competition gets tougher in the playoffs.

Sorry for the slow-going updates to the blog, guys.

There’s a lot to juggle right now, and not a whole lot of time to do it in.

Three days a week isn’t enough to cover this entire beat and provide you good blogging as well. But that’s all I’m being given right now.

  13. You know Says:

I understand them not giving you too much time before, but from Wisconsin on out they should give you more time.

On a side note, if anyone hasn’t seen the ESPN conversation, Cp vs. W, it’s pretty funny you should go check it out. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/conversation?gameId=283270275

  14. Joshua D. Scroggin Says:

Thanks for the heads up. That was a good read.

  15. Pauly LB Says:

If given a choice, as a reader I would prefer the continued Cal Poly coverage in The Tribune — even at the expense of the blog. Actually, that is exactly what it looks like has happened.

Just curious — since you are getting three days per week to work the beat — on the other two days does Ashley have you selling subscriptions in grocery stores???

  16. Pauly LB Says:

15 days between new blog subjects — what a shame. Any highlights from Wisconsin? I was at the game and I saw quite a few…

  17. Joshua D. Scroggin Says:

I’ve got some video and audio to upload from the Wisconsin game. Coming soon.

  18. 2 pt conversion in the playoffs only Says:

I’ve watched too many botched field goals and/or PAT’s to keep quiet. I pray at night (cause I still can’t sleep) that the CP coaching staff goes for it on 4th down and always goes for 2 after a td. It’s simple math:

    4 td’s with a 50% chance of a 2 pt conversion equals 4 pts.

    4 td’s with a 75% chance of a PAT equals 3 pts.

Come on POLY you are a smart school…figure it out.

And that isn’t even counting the fact that POLY probably has a greater than 50% conversion rate on 2 pointers….

FYI — Coach Rich Ellerson is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award for the top coach in FCS football. Details are in the following link…

Kickoff’s seem a bit short?, maybe so, but effective. If reviewing the NCAA team stats reports, the kickoff team yardage defense is ranked 4th in the country. GO STANGS!
