After spending the past two seasons playing in the Canadian Football League, former Cal Poly standout Mark Restelli has signed an NFL future’s contract with the Miami Dolphins.
A senior on the Mustangs’ 2008 Football Championship Subdivision playoff team, Restelli will be training with the Dolphins in the offseason with an opportunity to make the 2011 roster — provided a new collective bargaining agreement between the players and owners is agreed upon.
Restelli will likely play safety and special teams in Miami after spending the past two seasons at linebacker with the Edmonton Eskimos. The 24-year-old from Santa Margarita played rover in former Cal Poly coach Rich Ellerson’s flex defense, a kind of linebacker-safety hybrid.
The 6-foot-2, 215 pound Restelli had 58 tackles in Edmonton in 2009 but suffered a serious knee sprain in the Eskimos’ second game this past season. He was placed on the CFL’s nine-game injured list but returned by the end of the year to finish with 16 tackles and four sacks.
Prior to going undrafted in 2009, Restelli finished his Cal Poly career with 267 tackles, a number that ranks 10th all-time in the program’s Division I history.
