Fiddlin’ around
March 6, 2007 musicalI’m no stranger to sing-along extravaganzas.
I’ve gone “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with “The Wizard of Oz” and shouted my share of insults at the screen at “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
I’ve even participated in an event known as “Sing Your Own Messiah,” which invites concert goers to sing Handel’s “Messiah” alongside professional soloists and choir members. (Fortunately, the sheer force of the music drowns out any false notes.)
Admit it, folks. There’s a certain guilty pleasure to busting out show tunes at the top of your lungs.
Tonight, local filmgoers will have a chance to sing, shout and hum along to one of the 20th century’s best musicals: “Fiddler on the Roof”
The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival is screening the 1971 film in honor of acclaimed director Norman Jewison, one of this year’s King Vidor honorees.
Follow the joys and trials of the milkman Tevye and his small Russian village as you sing “Tradition” and “If I Were a Rich Man.” Giggle through “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and enjoy a long sigh during “Sunrise, Sunset.”
You might want to bring a water bottle. “Fiddler” clocks in at about three hours, and includes an intermission.
Sing-along “Fiddler on the Roof” starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight at The Fremont Theatre, 1025 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo. Tickets are $8, and entry is free with a film festival pass. Call 546-3456 or visit slofilmfest.org for more information.
I wouldn’t miss it.
