Fresh powder and sweet stunts

documentary

For some, winter means mountain sunshine glinting off a mound of fresh powder, strapping on skies or a snowboard and making the snow fly.
Obviously, those folks don’t live on the Central Coast.
While the rest of the nation is basking in a winter wonderland, we sun-baked masses have another option: “Warren Miller’s Playground.”
Created by acclaimed director Warren Miller, the winter sports movie features impressive stunts against the breathtaking backdrops of Sweden, Japan, Dubai and Alaska.
“Playground” will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Spanos Theatre, at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo. Tickets are $15.
Each moviegoer will receive a lift pass to Sierra Summit Mountain Resort, near Huntington Lake.

Snowboarders get a dose of harsh reality Sunday with “Optimistic?”, a documentary about the future of the sport.
Absinthe Films follows 15 individuals as they examine weather trends this winter and the effects of global warming.
“Optimistic?” will be screened at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Spanos Theatre. Tickets are just $5.

For more information on both screenings, call 756-2787 or www.pacslo.org.
