Rob Brown and Dennis Quaid star in “The Express”

Tonight’s screening of “The Express” helps Special Olympics

What could be better than entertainment for a good cause?

Tonight, The Movie Experience and Universal Pictures are sponsoring a preview screening of “The Express” — about the first black football player to win a Heisman Trophy.

Proceeds benefit Special Olympics, the nonprofit organization that empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports training and competition.

Athlete-turned-actor Rob Brown (”Finding Forrester,” “Coach Carter”) plays Ernie Davis, the talented running back who went from New York high school hero to Syracuse University standout in the late 1950s.

He won the Heisman in 1961 and netted the NFL draft’s number-one slot. After being drafted by the Washington Redskins and traded almost immediately to the Cleveland Browns, Davis’ career was cut tragically short.

Dennis Quaid co-stars as Davis’ hard-nosed coach, Ben Schwartzwalder.

“The Express” doesn’t open in theaters for a week, so this is a great chance to catch the movie and help developmentally disabled athletes.

“The Express” will be screened at 7 p.m. tonight at the Fremont movie theater, 1025 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo. A champagne reception and raffle begins at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and include refreshments.

For more information or to purchase tickets, call 544-6444 or visit the Special Olympics Web site.
