Don’t think women are funny? Check out these laughing ladies

I don’t care what any misogynistic, knuckle-dragging caveman says: Women are funny.

For some bizarre reason, the question of female funniness has been on the table for a while.

Critics wonder whether Margaret Cho’s risque political humor, Wanda Sykes’ blunt, sassy sarcasm or Sarah Silverman’s twisted sweetness can compare to the likes of an Eddie Murphy or a George Carlin. They ask if women’s wit appeals to the average man. They contend that, as Vanity Fair columnist Christopher Hitchens famously asserted, the most “impressive ladies” are “hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three.”

In the words of girls everywhere, gimme a break.

As if to prove my point, EW.com has created a list of funny femmes: “The 25 Funniest Actresses in Hollywood.”

Leading the list is Anna Farris, who stars opposite Seth Rogen’s psychotic mall cop in “Observe and Report.”

Although I must admit that Ms. Faris’ charms are somewhat lost on me, the people at Entertainment Weekly think she’s the bee’s knees — a bubbly “House Bunny” blonde with ditzy charm.

The rest of the women on the list are more to my liking: nerdy sex symbol Tina Fey of “30 Rock,” acid-tongued beauty Leslie Mann (“Knocked Up,” “17 Again”) and the simply awesome Allison Janney (“The West Wing,” “Juno”) to name a few.

The list even offers some unexpected candidates, such as “Flight of the Conchords” superfan Kristen Schaal and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” comic foil Cheryl Hines. And don’t forget Emily Blunt, who went from a bitchy fashionista in “The Devil Wears Prada” to a daffy cleaning lady in “Sunshine Cleaning.” 

However, I’m a bit disappointed to see some of Hollywood’s older comediennes missing from the list — such as Jane Curtain, Ellen Degeneres, Fran Drescher and Carol Burnett.

Most of the actresses mentioned on EW’s list are in their 20s or 30s.

The oldest is Allison Janney at 49, followed by 48-year-olds Jane Lynch (“Best in Show”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine”).

Do I detect a note of ageism?

After all, guys get funnier with age — the result of skill, experience and countless nights of partying. I’m pretty sure the same goes for these great, gorgeous funny girls.
