A small sampling of “The Best Movies of All Time Map”

“The Best Movies of All Time Map” draws the connections between our finest films

What do “Citizen Kane,” “Star Wars” and “The Godfather: Part II” have in common?

They’re all on “The Best Movies of All Time Map.”

Designed by David Honnorat at French blog Vodkaster.com, the map literally links the top 250 films of the past century.

Each brightly colored line signifies a different genre, ranging from romance to comedy to the more muddled “thriller/horror/monster.” There’s even a category called”Universally Acknowledged Masterpieces;” it includes such greats as “Vertigo” and “The Seven Samurai.”

From a distance, the whole thing resembles a map of the New York subway system or the London Underground.

Like many lists of its kind — I’m looking at you, Empire magazine –  “The Best Movies of All Time” places a stronger emphasis on recent films than on decades-old classics.

Does “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” deserve to be seen in the same company as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Elephant Man”? Is “The Departed” as good of a film as “Goodfellas”?

I think not.

The fault may lie in the fact that our cartographer drew his data from an Imdb.com poll conducted on June 19, 2009. In other words, this list is the result of an online popularity contest, not an expert debate.

That doesn’t diminish the entertainment value of the featured films, of course. Most of these movies are critically acclaimed and wildly popular blockbuster hits.

My advice is to treat “The Best Movies of All Time Map” like a list of well-educated suggestions, rather than the ultimate guide. Pick a line and follow it wherever it may lead.

Sesame Street isn’t on this map either.

Interesting map although I find the movies on some of the road curious.

I always wanted to create a visual movie recommendation application. I can see it perfectly in my head, however I don’t have the time or the web design skills to ever make it happen. Guess it will always remain a movie fanatic’s fever dream.
