Cambria woman is ready to “Wipeout” tonight

Debbie Markham returns to ABC’s obstacle course to take another shot at the title

Two years after she won $50,000 on ABC’s popular obstacle-course competition “Wipeout,” Central Coast native Debbie Markham hopes to slip, slide and stumble toward victory once more.

Markham, a professional photographer who has competed in more than 50 triathlons, taped her first appearance on the show in fall 2009.

The episode, which aired June 24, 2010, showed the Cambria resident dodging projectiles, dropping into mud pits, and spinning on a slippery turntable during her speedy dash through the multi-stage “Wipeout” course.

Dubbed “Sugar Mama” on the show because of her love of sweets, Markham told The Tribune in 2010 that her most strenuous hurdle was a revolving red bar designed to trip contestants, and the scariest was “jumping off the treadmill, not knowing what I’d land onto.”

Although she described the obstacles as “more annoying, jolting and distracting than painful,” Markham said what really hurt was her “ending leap to the circle platform.”

“I really impaled my stomach and ribs,” she recalled. “(Later) odd muscles hurt throughout my body, (muscles) that I rarely use but had to ‘engage’ to hold on…everything was so slippery and slick!”

Markham, 41, taped another episode of “Wipeout” this summer.

In it, she’ll compete against other “Wipeout” winners, tackling a campfire-themed obstacle course that features giant marshmallow skewers and a faux bear with four revolving legs.
