Some surfers complain whenever they see a kayaker in the water. But what really irks me is when I see an elephant in the lineup.
Because, trust me, you don’t want to be anywhere near a pachyderm when it wipes out.I say this not because I have a thing against elephants — although one elephant at the LA Zoo (You know who you are, Tubby!) once threw a large rock at me.
I say it because one day, there could be swarms of elephants trying to get The Stoke.Check out that photo above. I found that while perusing the historic photos offered by the Los Angeles Public Library’s photo archive. The caption on the photo reads:
“Surfers at Santa Monica were a little startled on April 28, 1962, to see a water-skiing elephant. Five-and-a-half-year-old Bimbo, Jr., one of the animal stars of the De Wayne Bros. Circus at Pacific Ocean Park, has the rare distinction of being the youngest elephant to perform this remarkable feat.”
Did you catch that? Bimbo Jr. is the youngest elephant to water ski. So, presumably, there were (are???) many more, though perhaps older, elephants out there, frolicking in the water.
And, yeah, I know. You’re saying, “Well, Pat. That’s a photo of an elephant waterskiing. You said this elephat surfs.” And to this I say, first of all, “Stop talking to me through my own thoughts!” And then I say, “Check out this photo of Bimbo on a surf board,” and tell me Junior doesn’t surf:
