Things Surfers Like: Beach Cams

Back in the old days, surfers spent a good deal of time driving. That’s because they never knew what to expect of waves until they saw them. And the only way to see them back then was to actually see them.

In person.

But today there’s a modern invention called the beach cam, which allows you to look at waves miles from the beach.

The idea behind beach cams, of course, is that it allows the surfer to check out the waves without having to get out of bed. Or, at least, not far from it. That way, if the surf sucks, the surfer can say, “Nevermind” and go back to sleep.

A lot of old timers will say, “But driving to check out the waves is part of the fun!” Yet, some surfers are lazy. Besides, gas is expensive.

Many surfers will check beach cams even if they have no intention of surfing. This often occurs at workplaces, where the surfer dreams of doing something other than working.  If the working surfer eyes a beach cam and the waves look good, the best scenario is that the waves remain good when the work day is over.

Except by then it’s usually too windy. Or pitch dark.

  1. I just like looking at “cams.” Like the “corn cam,” which literally shows corn growing in Iowa. Or the “turkey cam,” which chronicles the thrilling life of a “pardoned” Thanksgiving turkey.
