I Hear Dolphins

bottlenose_dolphin_ksc04pd0178.jpgUgh. Having caught the cold/flu/whatever bug, I haven’t exactly had a chance to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather.

In fact, most of Monday and parts of Tuesday were spent lying in bed, cocoon-like as I popped a succession of Halls cough drops into my mouth.

Fortunately, I didn’t get sick until Sunday, which means I was able to enjoy the awesome weather Saturday.

In the water at A-Beach, I found myself surrounded by two different schools of dolphins. At one point, hoping to get a better view, I dipped below the water’s surface. While under, the view wasn’t that much better – things are just a little blurry in the ocean — but I could actually hear the dolphins talking.

No, I’m not crazy. I could actually hear them communicating in very high-pitched, whistle-like voices. If you check out the dolphin sounds here, it sounded like the most high-pitched noises. I haven’t checked with my Dolphin-to-English dictionary yet, but I think they were telling me they had the next wave.

You often hear that where there are dolphins, there are no sharks because sharks are supposedly afraid of dolphins. But that’s not true. In fact, since they eat the same foods, the presence of dolphins might just tip off the presence of Sharky.

Nonetheless, dolphins in the water are still a good thing, as this surfer in Monterey found out a year ago.

  1. Same thing happened to me at that same beach in Dec, but I was on my board when I heard them, not underwater. I was alone and it kind of freaked me out. It was a clear day and I could see them moving under me. Very cool though.

  2. Are you sure they weren’t commenting on your blog?

  3. David:

As you know, I welcome comments from ALL mammals on this blog.
