I’m not a scaredy cat or anything, but still . . . as I told my friend Dan the other day, I would probably have a lot more fun in the ocean if there was no threat of sharks whatsoever.
I mean, I’m not staying out of the water for fear of Whitey or anything. But I don’t frolick a whole lot. And I’d really like to frolick more.
Basically, as soon as I’m off my board, I’m quickly jumping back on it — as if a great white is going to see my board and go, “Forget it — he’s on a board.”
Still, I think that’s one advantage those Lake Michigan guys have: They never have to worry about sharks. Sure, the waves suck. And who knows — there’s probably some Al Capone victims still floating around in there somewhere. But not having sharks is a good thing.
Now there’s even more good news for LM sliders: The surf’s about to be up in the Windy City.
Apparently, there’s been a battle going on for 20 years over whether to allow surfing in Chicago. (There’s actually a Chicago chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.) And it looks like the city will finally allow it. So congrats, Chi-Town. Now let’s see if the Cubs can ride the wave of success to the World Series!

For a good look at Great Lakes surfers, check out the movie “Unsalted.” You’ll be surprised at some of the waves on there. The photo above is a still from the movie.
