I’ll have to say I’m a little late on the Wilco bandwagon. But when I first listened to the Chicago band’s last album, “Sky Blue Sky,” I understood why they are such critical favorites.
Now, I realize longtime fans will mock me for my late arrival. Some even think the band jumped the shark with “Sky Blue Sky,” saying it’s tame and safe. But it’s a richly melodic mind trip that puts me at ease. (The song “Either Way” is hypnotic.)
And, what can I say – I like being at ease.
The newest, self-titled Wilco album could easily be a companion piece to “Sky Blue Sky” with its layered guitars and Jeff Tweedy’s drowsy vocals. But it’s one thing to write songs that sound good and another to actually write catchy songs. You know, those numbers that make you replay them in your head hours after listening to them.
This isn’t a perfect album, mind you. The self-referential “Wilco (The Song)” hasn’t really connected with me yet. And the record probably could have ended a track or two earlier. But Tweedy does a great job creating a catchy chorus on the harmony-filled “You Never Know.” Meanwhile, guest artist Feist proves to be a good partner in “You And I,” a soft ballad with tight harmonies. And “I’ll Fight” includes an electric organ part that reminds me that more songs ought to have electric organ.
As a rule, I don’t get overly excited about new releases. But when this one came out, I quickly listened to samples online. It took just one listen to encourage me to go out and buy it — the first new CD I’ve purchased in a while.
