A kids show that was too weird to be real

For a long time, I thought I had dreamed it up. Then, one day, my brother said to me, “Hey — do you remember that show ‘BJ and the Dirty Dragon’?”

And I was like, “YES! I do remember that show!”

And instantly I felt a little less crazy. Because, man — that show was weird.

“BJ and the Dirty Dragon Show” was the kid’s show that aired in Chicago in the — well . . . a while ago. It had these weird-looking puppets, and it was hosted by creator Bill Jackson. Eventually, as my surf buddy Clambake reminded me, the show morphed into ”The Gigglesnort Hotel,” which actually went into syndication.

Anyway, the show also featured this slab of clay named Blob, whose face would be re-arranged to suit his mood. Blob never talked, really, but he made all these goofy noises. (You’ve GOT to check out the video above.) Blob always reminded me of this guy I knew who wasn’t quite right upstairs, if you catch my drift.

As a kid, I often made my own Blobs. And, just recently, I introduced my daughter to the World of Blob.

Like many of the shows in this era, “Gigglesnort” led you to conclude that the creator just had to be stoned.

  1. Haha, clambake checking in. I’ll share this blog with my friends for a laugh. You need to buy the dvds (if they exist).

  2. Thanks for posting this. I’d begun to think it was just a figment of my childhood imagination. Now I’m going to have to check out YouTube for NewZooReview.

  3. How much pop culture flotsam do we have sloshing around in our attics?
Mine just flashed on replaying a theme song fragment…”Its the NewZooReview, Coming right at you.”

  4. I have no memory of this show. But maybe I just blocked it out due to deep childhood trauma.
