I’ve only been skiiing once in my entire life. And, I have to say, I wasn’t too bad at it.
I started out on the bunny slopes, where I failed miserably. Then, for some reason, my friends convinced me to go down the big hill. And I actually figured it out.
Of course, skiiing was sort of expensive, and I was always broke. So I never really did it again. Then, years later, I took up surfing, which was not only cheaper but also more fun than skiing.
Anyway, I don’t know a whole lot about the sport, but I gather that Warren Miller was sort of the Bruce Brown of ski movies. While I’ve never seen any of his flicks, the trailer for the movie “Dynasty” looks like the type of movie even non-skiers can enjoy.
I mention this because “Dynasty” will screen tomorrow at Cal Poly. While I usually write about surfing here, I realize there are quite a few surfers who also ski. Besides, back in the day, Miller actually started out making both surf and ski movies. But eventually ski flicks became his thing, as he went on to make a ski film a year, beginning in 1950.
Of course, while this film is being billed as “Warren Miller’s ‘Dynasty,’” it’s really not Warren Miller’s “Dynasty.” He officially retired some time ago, left his son Kurt in charge, and then Kurt sold the film company to Time Warner.
After sort of retiring, Miller was going to continue to narrate the movies. but then decided to retire for real when new execs tried to get him to take voice lessons.
So the movie really has nothing to do with Warren Miller, except that it carries on the tradition and the name.
Nonetheless, based on the trailer, it looks pretty good, with lots of exotic locations and some amazing shots. I can imagine what it would look like in high definition on a big screen.
