Sidetracked

It’s still three months away, but I’m already excited about Totally Awesome Day.

If you haven’t heard about Totally Awesome Day, that’s probably because I made it up. Just this past week.

I figured everyone else can make up holidays — including unimportant ones, like Boss Appreciation Day – so why can’t I make one up that celebrates something much more important.

Us.

It’s been sort of a tough year, after all. So I figured I’ll set an arbitrary date for when things are going to become, well . . . totally awesome. And I decided that was going to happen June 30.

Can’t say why I picked June 30; it just came to me. But it’s decided — and marked on all three of our calendars (“Big Lebowski,” guitars and puppies).  To make Totally Awesome Day work, we will need balloons and some sort of lights. There should be a cake, too. Presents are optional, but I don’t want Totally Awesome Day to become overly  commercialized.

There will not be Hallmark cards commemorating Totally Awesome Day; That’s not awesome.

I’m thinking I might write a song for Totally Awesome Day. But until then, the above tune from “SpongeBob Squarepants” — “The Best Day Ever” — will work.

But most importantly, we need to get excited about Totally Awesome Day. Because the lead-in to Totally Awesome Day — the pre-stoke, if you will — is just as important as the day itself.  And while Totally Awesome Day will become a yearly tradition, the initial Totally Awesome Day is intended to kick off an ongoing trend of totally awesome days.

Of course, this is just a new family tradition in the Pemberton household. But, in my attempt to better the world, I’m inviting everyone else to celebrate Totally Awesome Day as well.  So on June 30, take a day off work and plan to celebrate.

It’s gonna be awesome.
