A fishy Dick Van Dyke surfing story

Last week’s staycation didn’t involve a lot of activity on my part, which is okay since I needed the respite. I had hoped for at least a couple of surf sessions, but after going out and looking at it four times, I wound up going only once.

Instead, I spent more time on the couch, watching old “Dick Van Dyke Show” reruns with my daughter.

Surfing and Dick Van Dyke did come together, though, when I serrendipitously came across this odd story about a surfing adventure Van Dyke had as a younger man. While on ”The Late Late Show” with Craig Ferguson last fall, Van Dyke said he used to surf a 10-foot board on the East Coast.

“I went out once and fell asleep on that board,” Van Dyke said.  ONce he awoke, he added, “I started paddling with the swells and I started seeing fins swimming around me, and I thought I was dead.”

The fins, it turned out, belonged to dolphins, Van Dyke said. “And they pushed me all the way to shore.”

Now, that may sound a little, ah . . . fishy. But Van Dyke added, “I’m not kidding.”

And, really – who’s to question a guy who once drove a flying car?
