Summer swell in Morro Bay

I read last week that the organizers of the Mavericks surf contest are all excited about this year’s contest because it’s an El Nino year, which means there will be big waves. In fact, they even expanded the window for the big wave contest, thinking the big wave season might actually start early.

There weren’t exactly big waves around here this weekend, though, as summer swell continued. Still, we managed to catch some waves, and I managed to catch some of those on my GoPro.

The first pic, at the top, is Tribune photographer Joe Johnston, who had mentioned that he rarely gets photographed surfing. Of course, he rarely surfs with us, so that might have something to do with it. (He lives in South County; we’re in the Morro Bay area.)

The next is Dan the Man, who has an uncanny ability to see the camera when he’s on a wave. Even on a day when I get decent photos of other people, the best shots somehow end up being of Dan.

The next one is Dan’s brother, John, who happens to be a really good surfer from Orange County. I didn’t get a good shot of it, but I saw him get covered up on what was about a 2-foot wave. Pretty amazing.

The next one is Joe again — check out the nose ride.

This week looks to bring more summer surf — and with little wind, according to wetsand.com. Personally, I could use a little mellowness before the El Nino swells arrive.
