1963 Lopez Canyon Oil

August 5, 1963

The headline shouted about a “Substantial” oil strike but the subhead says No Production Yet. This news report talks about drilling on top of a mountian in Lopez Canyon. Numbers were few and far between in this story and never having covered an oil story in that area I suspect the story was oversold.

The lede reads

LOPEZ CANYON – A new oil well being drilled here could tbe the beginnings of one of the richest oil fields in the state, Joseph M. Gross, president of the American Sun Petroleum Corporation, told the Telegram-Tribune Sunday.

With oil prices hovering around $100 a barrel drilling in the county is again spilling onto the news pages. The Carrizo Plain is the latest site being proposed for drilling.
