Sports Illustrated published their first swimsuit issue the year before in 1964. As part of the Spring fashion tab in 1965 The Tribune went to the exotic location of Shell Beach to include swimwear in their fashion coverage.

Knees were more controversial than I ever imagined.

Under a headline: Hemlines - the long and short of it
Was a people-in-the-street feature showing the legs of women and mug shots of men with their opinions about the era’s shortening skirt styles.

A few of the comments:
MRS. PAT WOOD -”Hemlines should be right in the middle of the knee,” and her husband agrees with her.

JEAN FLINK - They’re getting so short now they look like skating skirts.”

DORIS BODINE - Hemlines should go down about two inches. No woman has pretty knees.”

Men were less uniform in their opinion.

BOB FONDA - “If you want to look at knees you can go the beach.”

MARVIN R. LOEWEM -”A tall lady can’t find a dress suitable for her.”

ABDUL YAHYA - “As high as possible,” disagreeing with fiancé Rosalee Maas.

In the advertising, those all new - all transistor Wurlitzer organs look like a good deal at $699.
