I must be a cynic.
Does anyone believe that anyone got as excited as the woman in the McMahon’s ad about a 10% off sale?
She is at force 7 Beatlemania frenzy.
In case you were worried, the sale is a PUBLIC SALE.
It is an American tradition that we get excited about a good value.
Everything must go!

02-07-1969-tv-ad.jpgThe February 7, 1969 ad features the latest in television technology from RCA. In the 1960’s the console was the hot model to get. If you wanted a flat screen then turn off the TV and open the drapes.
I remember when my uncle got a console television with an early remote control.
Wow!
It would turn the knob from across the room!
It had a set of buttons that would strike a chime activating a servo in the set.
He got upset when I discovered I could randomly change the channel by jingling my key collection.
Yep, the first day I was introduced to a clicker I was randomly flipping channels even though there were only 5 to choose from.
I’m a flipper, I think it is something built into my DNA.

  2. She may have also just spotted a giant mutated monster. They were everywhere in those days — menacing suburbia, eating Mrs. McGregor’s cat, hogging the marmalade at the breakfast table.

  3. The console TV ad reminds me of my uncle, Chet Foxe of SLO who liked to tinker with electronics. He lived at the end of Lawrence Drive in the 50’s, up on the hill, so the family had a great view of the city. Like you, his DNA kicked in when having to listen to all those unwanted commercials. He made his own mute box, albeit wired, and was able to enjoy the window views without distraction.

(My memory is a bit fuzzy. If he didn’t invent this while living in San Luis, he did it after retiring in Marysville)
