Remember macramé?
It was huge in the 1970′s. Clothes, hammocks, hanging plants it seemed like everything but swim suits could be made by knotting yarn.
Yeah, there’s a art I can manage. Never was good at weaving but tying knots, I might be able to pull that off. Does getting yarn tangled count?
According to Wikipedia the art form can be traced back to 13th century Arabia. Every so often the art form is resurges, Victorian times, and the neo-hippie 1990′s were other examples of renewed interest in the craft.
While these aren’t exactly Daisy Duke’s hot pants they do have daisies on them. This advertisement ran in Parade and Family Weekly magazines and gives you a chance to make your own stunning, sophisticated Hot Pants Outfit.
Ponchos, sweaters, baby things, afghans all can be created with this Jordan Fairchild loom. The kit comes with the finest imported French acrylic yarn. (Uh, isn’t all French yarn by definition imported?)
Once completed the hand made boutique quality outfit will be worth much more than the $15.95 investment.

Looks like something I spotted recently in a thrift store recently. Yikes. I’ll never understand the ’70s lust for itchy, uncomfortable and gaudy acrylic clothes.
Sarah, not to mention when stripes and checks worn together were “fashion”
Lordy knows how many Houndstooth pants I had growing up. All us cowboys and 4-H kids wore them…….boot cut, of course
I had a girlfriend in the 70′s who had a macrame swimsuit. Skimpiest thing I’d ever seen.
Paraphrasing the late latenight comic Johnny Carson,
‘They made macramé swimsuits?
I did not know that.’
I made macrame for a living in the 70s and I knit and crochet. Although the photo is small and I can not read the writing, I would say that the photo/advertisement is crochet,& definately not macrame.
Macrame and crochet are completely different. Macrame is knotting usually with string, rope or similar. Crochet is made with yarn and you use a crochet needle. crochet has the ability to make those “rosettes” that you see in the photo. Macrame does not.

Thanks Lynda for the education.
The copy in the ad calls the tool a loom.
I made the mistake of assuming crochet was only done with a hooked needle but it looks like there is more than one way to get there from here.
One thing is for sure, I would be bad at all three arts.
I’ve actually been thinking about making myself a macrame bikini!
But not with those shorts!
