The Melancholy Daze, Satterfield cartoon
November 10, 2009 – 11:19 amNovember 8, 1918
This was the other comic on the Daily Telegram’s page two that day. As fall swept in the end of World War I was near at hand. This cartoon by Bob Satterfield shows a downcast Kaiser Wilhelm II with a can labled defeat, tied to a leg and leaves falling with the same label.
A jaunty teddy bear pokes his head in from the side and says “Its a cold, crool world eh, Bill.”
I had associated the cartoonist using a droll mascot with cartoonist like Patrick Oliphant but it is a much older technique than I gave it credit for.
A biography of the Satterfield can be seen at the left side of this page of the Andover News from 1924.
The last German emperor would abdicate the next day and live life in exile in Holland. His resignation would release the German armed forces from their oath of allegiance to him and a negotiated peace would soon follow.

David,
Upon closer inspection, that can is tied to the tail of the daschund covered by the Kaiser’s coat. Sadly, the Kaiser’s legacy didn’t end with him. Only his particular war.

Ah, poor Kaiser Wilhelm. You kinda feel sorry for the guy.

I hasten to add that no animals were harmed in the republication of this cartoon. Thanks for the comments Joe & Sarah.
