The Daily Telegram made an effort to keep women up to date on the latest fashion trends with wire service features like this one.

HAT MIRROR LATEST
SHE’LL SEE YOU: WATCH OUT

It may be curiosity–and then again it may be caution!
Anyway girls are wearing mirrors dangling from their hat brims these days.
“I find my little hat-mirror very useful,” says Miss Esther Hoffmann, with whom the millinery-mirror originate “and its an ornamental little bauble, too, to have bobbing from one’s hat brim.
“It’s useful because it gives you a glimpse of who’s walking behind you. Maybe it’s someone you want to dodge, so when the mirror gives you a hint, you step into a shop or down a side street and escape. Or may be it’s one of those annoying “Johnies” coming along–then the mirror is very useful, you l can run away from him, or if he looks dangerous you can call an officer.
“But even if there were no danger in the street the little hat-mirror would be lots of fun–with one eye on my mirror and one eye on the street ahead I feel, like a modern Argus, seeing everything in all directions.”

Note to the guys, if she dodges you, it’s the same as being unfriended.

If you are as rusty on Greek mythology as I am:
Argus or Argos was an unsleeping many eyed giant. Naturally the gods put him to work as a watchman. Talk about dry eyes. It is not clear if they gave him a uniform or a can of pepper mace.

In other news on the page, social networking is not new to our era. Before television and radio and at the beginning of the movie and phonograph era clearly people liked to network but rather than via facebook they met face to face. Keep in mind the town’s population was a fraction of what it was today.

This issue included meetings by Modern Woodmen of America, The Royal Camp, Knights of Columbus, Masons, Oddfellows, Ancient Order of Druids, Elks, Eagles, and Moose.

This is my favorite entry of the dozen or so listed.

Held Regular Meeting.

Only routine matters were transacted last evening by San Luis Camp, No. 7327 Royal Neighbors of America at their regular meeting held in Eagles’ hall.

Here’s hoping you have only routine matters until our next meeting.

  1. One Response to “Hat mirror, safety and style”

  2. The hat mirror reminds me of those little mirrors that bicyclists sometimes have on their helmets.

It’s either an indication of how large hats were back then, or how dangerous streets were. I’d hate running into “those annoying ‘Johnies,’” whatever they are.
