When I worked at Cal Photo during my college years in the early 1980s there were three places within walking distance for a quick coffee and breakfast. Sunshine Donuts, Boston Bagel Co. and Delite Bakery.
Cal Photo was on the corner of Higuera and Morro Streets where the Apple store is today.
Delite had fabulous cream filled chocolate eclairs that would start the day off with an explosion of chocolate and sugar that could leave the consumer in a quivering glucose crash an hour later if the compensating levels of caffeine were not properly managed.
It was a delicate balance.
Walking into the store dozens of selections could be found in rows of lit cases, eclairs, cookies, breads, cakes and the smell of fresh baking.
The advertisement is from March 12, 1958. The bakery sold to new owner after decades downtown and later folded.
A similar experience can be found today at Carlock’s in Los Osos.
Though the quality and number of good coffee outlets downtown has improved since the early 80s I still haven’t found a prescription strength eclair like Delite used to serve.
What was your favorite downtown breakfast hangout?
