Blake Andrews shared this post card of Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. I am guessing this is the early 1950′s though if you have a better guess from the make of the cars please post a comment. Higuera was a two way street then, with no trees planted but lots of awnings on the south facing side of the street. The clock tower was still atop the Warden building at the corner of Chorro Street. F.W Woolworth Co. department store was open for business at the far left, now the Network Mall.
This was the state of the art regional shopping center at the time. This appears to be pre-parking meter but post traffic light era.
Thanks for sharing the photo Blake, if you have an image to share on the blog send a 2MB jpg to dmiddlecamp[at]thetribunenews.com, replace the [at] with the usual symbol. Those Tribune readers with long memories will recall Blake is a member of the Class of 2000 that the Tribune documented in a long-term project. His photography website is linked here.
Hopefully I have kept the spambots away for another day.

What a great color photo David! Many thanks to Blake for sharing it. Heres my take on the date. Since the photo can be no older than the newest car in it, it has to be at least late 1952 or early 53. On the left foreground is a black 49 Ford, and a very rare 47 Kaiser right behind it. But what clinches it for me is that absolutely pristine (shiny!)yellow Chevrolet Woodie Station wagon. That and the guy in the too short jeans, white socks and leather jacket.
Joe
Joe, thanks for the auto detective work.
Guy at the left, James Dean? Fonzie?
I forgot to mention the Woodie. I’d love to have that car in my driveway.
I would love to have any of those cars!! And, Dave.. considering where James Dean met his end, maybe it is James!!!
Very cool picture.
PS.
Near as I can tell, the Woodie is a 52.
oh my gosh! it’s wonderful
I can still remember those old streetlights. When they were replaced by sodium lights, they got stacked against the back fence behind the Rec-Center. The city street maintenance garage was attached to that building and, behind the Boy Scout office.
I have 8 of these postcards in my hand right now. love this pic.
