Japan wants peace, World War II week by week

Telegram-Tribune August 29, 1941 ©The Tribune

This just in, Japan wants peace.
Wait a minute, I thought we were at peace.
This story was from August 29, 1941.
The new cabinet in Japan was making public overtures to President Franklin Roosevelt in a effort to resolve tense relations. There was no indication that Japan would relax ties with the Axis powers or relent in its now almost 10 year war against China. For the time being it appears that Japan is avoiding a showdown with British and Americans in the Pacific.
