Victory Sized ACME Beer helps win the war

ACME beer ad from the then Telegram-Tribune, August 8, 1942. Advertisers promoted patriotism as they sold their products.

Every advertiser wanted to look supportive of the war effort as America began to seriously turn toward military production. Gone are the pin-up girls and claims of “Dietetically Non-Fattening” from last years ad campaign.
Scrap metal was being collected to make everything from bullets to Liberty ships. Sugar, rubber, gasoline and steel were among the commodities in short supply as two major war fronts needed supplies. Add to the mix assistance for the Soviet Union and America was pushed to the limit during World War II. Even beer bottle caps became patriotic. I think the ad copy writers had been hitting the “Victory Sized” bottles but you can be the judge.

Worried guy:
“Bottle caps rationed! Well if Uncle Sam needs the metal that’s good enough for me…but it’s sure going to be tough not having any ACME beer!

Surprised guy:
What’s this!..Plenty of ACME Beer…Plenty of bottles…And we can all continue to enjoy ACME if we’ll by the “Victory Size” quart bottles and make one cap do the work of three?

Happy guy:
Say what was I worrying about?…Here I’m enjoying ACME the same as ever! I’m helping win the war by saving metal for Uncle Sam! And I’m saving money by buying ACME in the full-quart “Victory Size” And I’m buying war stamps with what I save. I haven’t got a thing in the world to kick about!

The ad shows two tag lines, “Victory Size for the Economy-Wise” and on the bottle “Economize with Victory Size.”
