Arroyo Grande football practice

August 20th, 2008 · No Comments

I was able to catch the last 30 minutes of the Arroyo Grande practice on Wednesday afternoon. They were in an 11-on-11 drill, and with second-year starting quarterback Clark Goossen leading the way, the Eagles were working on a spread offense attack. However, the Eagles will stay true to their roots and continue running the fly/power running game but head coach Tom Goossen has his team working on a more diverse offense.

From what I saw, the Eagles were moving the ball nicely against a defense that was only rushing four at half speed. Over the span of about 20 minutes, the Eagles had only three or four passes fall incomplete, while running three to four receiver sets. They ran some bubble screens, short slants and one or two deep patterns. Clark Goossen was also throwing relatively well on the run. He was on the move inside the pocket a few times and he even broke a nice run out off the left side, which drew a couple sharp whistles as defenders approached to make the two-hand touch (”tackle”).

From my conversations, it seems that both Nipomo and Arroyo Grande players are really looking forward to playing each other in week two. It’s understandable, since the game is long overdue.
