For those of you who missed Friday night’s game, I’m sorry, because it was a thriller for the first 3 1/2 quarters. Atascadero won 38-21, but the score doesn’t do the game justice. With about 8 minutes remaining in the game Paso Robles closed the score to 24-21. But a questionable call with 7 minutes remaining by Bearcats head coach Rich Schimke on 4th and 15 at their 39-yard line led to a turnover on downs instead of a punt.
I’m not saying what Schimke did was wrong. He said after the game that he had faith in his guys, and having talked to him throughout this season I knew right away that was the case. He has one of the better quarterbacks on the Central Coast running his offense and two very solid receivers, unfortunately the throw down the right sideline by Thomas Bernal was off its mark. The decision to throw instead of kick could have turned everything around if the pass was completed — that’s why second guessing is easy.
Even a punt might not have made a difference. Up to that point, Atascadero had shown that it could run the ball at will against the Bearcats. If Paso Robles had punted, all the Greyhounds would have needed to do is run down the clock with a sustained drive. With the way things were going, it very easily could have happened.
This decision, while crucial, wasn’t the be-all-end-all of the game. The Bearcats scored three touchdowns and had 232 yards of total offense, while Atascadero running back Nick Tenhaeff alone ran for 239 yards and five touchdowns. That right there was the difference in the game.
Atascadero won its third consecutive PAC 7 championship and the Greyhounds have earned the No. 1 seed out of the PAC 7 for the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Wow 5 touchdowns 239 yards can we say COUNTY PLAYER OF THE YEAR!
Great game Greyhounds came to play physical ball. Go for it 4th and 15 was a big call. He needed a big play and made the call to go. Some years they make you some years they break you.
Two good northern representatives. Hope both do well.

What rivalry? Atascadero wins every year. To be a rivalry paso would have to win occationally. Righetti has been a better rivalry game vs Atown then Paso. I was even starting to drink Paso’s koolaid for just a bit. I’m spitting that Bearcat pee out. I’m going to drink Orange Crush from now on.

I could not disagree more that the 4th and 15 was not the be-all-end-all. Tenhaeff was running all over the ‘cats, why call a very low percentage pass play (Paso certainly was not throwing at will against the ‘hounds defense) and give Tenhaeff and the ‘hounds only 39 yards of field with almost 8 minutes to play. If you punt at least you increase your chances of stopping the ‘hounds with a longer field. Absolutely a very arrogant call and absolutely the wrong call. It killed any chance Paso had of winning the game.

From what I have heard, Paso’s head coach is not in the same league as his own players. This seems like the same old story year after year. Paso has a great team and the coach blows it. Maybe he could coach the girls basketball team next year, at any other school.
5 Anon E. Muss // Nov 16, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Actually, Schimke used to coach girls basketball before he became head football coach. He then was the head coach of both sports for a year or two.
As for a “rivalry” game… this is the third time in a row Atascadero has won, but before that, it was eight straight for the Bearcats, and five straight (including the 1993 CIF title game) for Atascadero before that. When Atascadero won in 1960, it was the first time in something like 18 games spanning back to the late 1930s.

I stand corrected. It DOES sound like a rivalry. Just A-town is on a good run. Thanks for the history lesson.
What is the history on Coach Schikme?

I mean how many years has he coached football at Paso?
8 Big Cat02 // Nov 17, 2008 at 10:34 am
Schimke needs to go! He has been a head coach in the program since 1999. He inherated three great teams in back to back to back season winning CIF his first two years and loosing in the semifinals to Santa Monica his third year.
What people do not realize is that through alll those years it was still the program that Stansbury had built! Stansbury was still running a lot of the show behind the sceens! Him and Alvord and Billy Tidwell were the real football gurus behind all of those wins. Everything went staright to Schimkes big head!
He is not the coach he thinks he is.
He is an ex-greyhound……he road the bench for the hounds for a few years under welsh.
Schimke is the most errogant person you will ever meet. He loves any attention he can get and no matter who suggest something to him you know he will do the opposite just to try and prove himself.
If i were Alvord the defensive coordinator and football god that he is… I would have walked up to Schimke and told him not to punt the ball just knowing he would do the opposite!
Schimke is a looser!!!! He needs to go! Mark Rose the athletic director needs to do his job and know that he has a coak artist for a head coach! Schimke will not win another big game in his tenure! They should win this week cause pacifica is weak but getting past the second round will be a miracle!
I feel bad for the kids!
If you could compair Schimke to any fictional character it would be BUD KILLMER…. varsity blue football coach of the Coytes!
Eventually someone stepped up to him and eventually Rose will find His head and get ride of Schimke too!
Class of 2002…..Schimke is a moron!!!!!!!!
9 Anon E. Muss // Nov 17, 2008 at 10:40 am
Bill Stansbury won the CIF title in the fall 1998 season and stepped down afterwards (so class of 1999 were his last seniors). Schimke took over the program after that and won CIF titles in his first two years, fall 1999 and fall 2000. I’m not sure if he was an assistant coach or a JV or freshman coach before that, but I’m sure he had to have coached something before being put in charge of the varsity football team, sort of how Vic Cooper was an assistant for 13 years at AHS before being named head coach.
So, to get to where I can see you’re going, Stansbury beat Atascadero in his last year for the first time since the last game of the 1993 regular season, and Schimke beat Atascadero in each of his first seven years as head coach (he’s now 7-3 against Atascadero). From the Atascadero side, Larry Welsh went 16-3 against Paso from fall 1979 to fall 1996 (including the 1993 CIF title game). Greg Asbury went 1-1 against Paso, Sam DeRose went 0-5 against Paso and now Cooper is 3-2 against Paso.

I think there is a bigger issue then the rivalry coming to light here. Both Atas and Paso used to play in the “little” league and then moved up to the Pac5/7. Yet now they DOMINATE the pac7. Is there something about North of the Grade that produces good High School Football?
At the rate they are improving maybe they can both make it to the quarter or semi finals this year?
13 Big Cat02 // Nov 17, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Yes Alvord was also an Atascadero alumni…. he on the other hand played athletics there. I dont have an issue with Schimke being an old grayhound i only have an issue with the way he down plays the rivalry between the two schools.
Alvord knows what the rivalry means and make sure he gets up for the game. Schimke only treats it like another league game.
I only said the Stansbury was guiding the program from behind the sceens for schimkes first two years and some of the third year.
I have played for both schimke and stansbury and am only giving you my honest feelings on how they coach. Schimke was also pasos second choice after stansbury stepped down to coach freshmen because he wanted to be free on saturdays to go watch his son play at san diego state. Stansbury now is an assistant at Hancock.
Anyone close to the highschool programs knows the politics behind it and will tell you Mark Rose will never fire Schimke. Schimke will go when he wants to.
Since Paso has changed their offense to a pass first offense how many times have the beat atascadero??? ZERO… they are 0-3 with Schimkes new genious offense. The old school pound you down offense…. use the clock… rest the defense…. that offense had pulled off 7 straight wins against the hounds until he got a wild hair that his way is the better way!
Its north county football to be tough, physical and pound you on offense and defense….Schimke should ask Santa Ynez if he can coach down there! We just dont need the guy around anymore. If you asked Vic Cooper he wouldnt want him on his staff either.
Schimke can run a great practice and his attention to detail is almost unmatched but the guy coaks everytime he has to make a big decision in a big game.
14 Anon E. Muss // Nov 18, 2008 at 9:19 am
Schimke changed to the Urban Meyer “spread” offense in 2005, had a tough preseason and then rolled through the league, including scoring on every possession of the second half to beat Atascadero. So the spread offense is 1-3 vs. Atascadero… the Greyhounds didn’t get a defense until 2006.

Looks like Paso ended up with the better draw in the playoffs…..
State rankings out today….
Paso#84 vs Pacifica #243
Atas.#88 vs Hart #220
If Paso wins then they will be playing St. Bonaventure #13 more than likely with homefield being decided by coinflip.
If Atascadero wins they will be plaing Moorpark #15 with coinflip deciding home field.
This is all assuming that St. Bonnie beats Newbury#150
and
Moorpark beats Camarillo #397
I think Newbury has a better chance to upset than Camarillo. Dont think either will win but Newbury has a better chance. I would rather play Newbury in Newbury than play moorpark at home!
Other rankings of interest…..
Saugus#36 vs Righetti#271
Thousand Oaks#35 vs Santa Barbara#322
Oxnard#49 vs Westlake#83
Valencia#45 vs Ventura#169
Oaks Christian#11
St Joe #139
Pioneer Valley#236
SLO#381
Morro Bay#467
Good Luck to all our local teams….. my prayers our that Schimke wont blow it for this years seniors! Go Cats! Go Hounds!

Moorpark is scary. The Musketeers have only one loss, that to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation — better than any school in California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, etc. The score in that game was 17-14. Yikes.

There is so much to be stated about the PR game. I have watched PR Football for many decades, I rarely miss a game and I attend the JV and Freshman as I have young relatives. Big Cat tells a lot of truth, Rich inherited a great program and under his watch, he has killed it.
Whom saw the Diamante game? A great team that we dominated over and when we played Atascadero, why did we not replicate this? Where was Burbank? Why only 10 touches to Bridge when an RB needs more than that? Where was Flynn whom should be starting as the Senior and is a powerful scrambling QB?
When Bridge has a hard time with the defense, Remington or Burbank goes in as a blocking back yet, we did not do this. Why? Why did we not use Burbank to beat on the line and give Bridge some rest? Bernal has progressively declined, he fell over twice on his own accord and what I see as “hit shocked.” He does not want to be hit and who can blame him? What, 3 concussions on him and 2 on Flynn this year. His long game is weak and his short game is getting worse yet RS does not change the QB? I do not see any logic in this and I doubt we will see the Senior in playoffs either like last year after we lost Ladley and Bernal was suffering against Hart.
What idiot coach kills the QB? Ladley, Draper..the list piles up. Being an old QB for my Alma Mater PR, I like QBs and my choice when the air game was not going to happen would have been Flynn. At Diamante he had not seen more than a handful of snaps the entire season and played if I recall correctly 1 game last year, yet he rolled up big yards and the kid can fly plus cut, Bernal cannot do this. Bernal is a quicker passer but has no movement, so why bench the Senior? Arrogance? Maybe it has to do with the QBs father coaching at JV? Maybe it has to do with the recruiters coming to PR and being turned away when they wanted to look at some players and RS told them only Bernal and Van Dyke are the only good players??? Bernal is a junior…what kind of coach does this to the boys that play their hearts out for them? Every player deserves a look and Rich has no rights to turn them away, arrogance and hatred runs that man and benching the Senior in his last game against the biggest rivalry is dispicable and down right cowardice. What coach has a melt down in practice and starts to sing Atascadero’s School Anthem allowed to his PRHS players two days before the game? Can anyone answer this? What coach tells the newspapers he is to blame for the stupidity of the play calling yet in the locker room trashes the boys and tells them it is their fault? Who goes to the fund raiser for the game and addresses the crowd as basically an Atascadero graduate, citizen, loves their program and what not but, he wears crimson and that was all the accolades he gives PR?
For a man that never played and sat on the bench his high school years, he is an abomination that we no longer need. PR could have won if he played the way we played every game up to this game. If he utilized the players and play book from Diamante’s game, we could of had a good go. He did this to us last year also, no substituting, no modifications to the line… PR wins because of the coaches below him like Billy Tidwell, Alvord and a great coach that he chased away Coach Grey. He is a pollutant and has no respect from the team or parents or fans. He intimidates families and punishes their boys if they speak out. He uses up the players and discards them like trash and leaves the others to rebuild that young mans confidence up and believe me, his staff loathes him immensely.
PRHS needs to step up and eliminate the problem. RS is not the only person putting the time into these boys, its all the coaches through the years these young men have played for in youth sports and the great parents that have done everything that they could to raise proud boys.
It is all about trying to reclaim what he never had and maybe he deserved the bench because he is not a team player.

Afte last nights big win for Atascadero we learned in the 2nd half that maybe the offensive line should get MVP not Tenhauff. We’ll see who runs the ball next week against Moorpark and how the Hounds do before drawing any conclusions.
Congrats to Paso on their final win of the season. They will go thru the motions this week of thinking they can compete with St. Bonaventure. But the reality is it won’t even be a close game. St. Bonnie will hang 40 plus on Paso and Paso may score 14. Don’t blame Schikme for next weeks loss.
Morro Bay gets the biggest win of the night. Way to go…….

first and foremost let me be the first to state a few things, I am the head Jv football coach and Tim bernal was my hire not schimke’s, he is a class act and a hell of a coach. It was recently brought to my attention the things that have been being said on here, i find it classless and for that matter ignorant that those of you on here that claim to be paso grads would bad mouth a program that you once played for. i was apart of the CIF championship teams and have been on the inside for the last 5 years and when i read these blogs it humors me to how much you actually don’t know about the program, the players, and the coaches. it take thousands of hours to be able to get a team to the point that they are at in the season and for you to sit on here acting like you actually know what is going on within the program is amusing. lastley if you are going to come on here and bash people, players and the program grow some balls and don’t hide behind a username. true fans support their team even when things aren’t always pretty. if you want to know something about the team, players or coaches show up at practice and all your ignorant questions can be answered. for those of you that support us, thank you and we will not roll over for anybody, including bonnie. have a great day.

I know one thing is for sure, Atascadero has beat the kitty kats since Tenhaeff has been playing in the program. Tenhaeff has set many records and has proved himself enough to get offered a full ride scholarship to SDSU before his senior year even started. Yes, his O-line has helped him but thats their job. I can tell just by reading newspaper articles about Tenhaeff that he is extremley knowledgeable about football and must have a real passion for the game. It appears to me that whoever has the guts to talk so much trash about this kid must be very jealous of his talent and accomplishments. I dont even know the kid, but I think he deserves all the credit he is given. He has and still is working his butt off for the Greyhounds and I look forward to cathching some of his college games on espn.

Don’t be a negative FB fan, they all do great and produce great results as a TEAM.

Don’t worry, your son will get the MVP. Atascadero’s success is because of him not the O-line. Any team that had your son would have been League champs this year. I’m sure San Diego State will go undefeated next year.
Offensive linemen are never chosen for any awards. Only cute little quarterbacks and runners.

Anyone who has watched the Greyhounds this year knows that Tenhaeff was getting the yards mostly on his own in the early going this year. The line has improved over the course of the year and is far better now than it was against Clovis, St. Bonaventure, etc. But MVP takes into effect the entire season’s work, not just the final game. Also, remember that Tenhaeff got all those yards while playing on both sides of the ball. I think he would be an excellent choice for county player of the year.

Hey Monn,
As much as i can respect your loyalty to the Bearcat family…. I find it hard to believe that you can truely support Schimke the way you stated you do. I understand that he has guided you through the program and helped you to be the coach that you are(from what i have seen you are fair to the kids and a solid, knowledgable coach). I just can’t stand behind him. To each there own I guess. I know a few guys that he has screwed over in the past. This year talking with Andy Bridges Parents has been another eye opening experience. They have told me first hand that Schimke is telling recruiters that Andy is “too fat and slow.”
Playing for him my junior and senior year it was very clear that he has ways had his own agenda. He wants it to be the Schimke show. If I remember correctly and please correct me if I am wrong he even managed to screw up the recruiting process for one of the most promising athletes to ever come out of PRHS…Jason Holmes.
I am a bearcat and my blood is crimson through and through but I just wish that traditions would be carried on. It seems like he is always changing things up. i know you have to adjust to the new way of doing things but it just seems like its over board sometimes.
I know it is easy to second guess a coach when you are not at every practice and in every meeting behind closed doors but some of the most basic fundamentals of coaching he goes against and makes it easy for even a football novice to second guess.
I have said it before and truely believe it that he is a wonderful coach for practice. He has everything scripted and never wastes a second of practice time. he does committ himself to the program. i just dislike the way he down plays the PRHS vs. AHS rivalry. I also dislike the lack of disipline we have seem the last couple weeks from his team.
I hope you can respect my opinions and if there are things we dont see eye to eye on we can agree to disagree. I certainly respect your insider view and the fact that you came on this board to set both sides perspective.
Honestly I would love to be out there doing what you do. i just know that because I was not one of Schimkes choosen ones i will never get that opportunity. I have even been approached by Cooper to go assist in Atascadero….. but the only thing that would make me is a hypocrit. I am a Bearcats for life and in the words of Gil Asa i am just trying to be “a good bearcat.”

First of all, who ever wrote the above comment is an idiot and must be either a paso or mb fan.
Second, coach cooper might give credit to his O-line in the papers, but if you actually go to the games you’d see Nick T. could run behind any O-line in this county, and yes that includes crappy MB. Plenty of times Nick has hit his line closed up and bounced and spun off them and took off for 40 yds another direction, it’s his yards after contact that make him so good. On a side note we do have an excellent line too.
Well now that Nick is leaving after this year, it will be interesting to see that other kid, I think his name is Sterling Bullard tear up the county next year.
35 Anono // Nov 25, 2008 at 6:06 pm
I think Bullard’s success was miss-interpreted after last weeks game (FB fan). Yes the O-line has gotten better, however, Atascadero has just been fortunate to have great back after great back.
It was not the O-line that returned several kicks for touchdowns this year (Bullard) and it was not the O-line that made Tenhaeff the leading rusher and leading scorer in the area the past two years with two totaly different O-lines. Not to take anything away from the O-line, it couldn’t be done without them and one can see the increased production as the year has gone on.
Bullard takes nothing away from Tenhaeff’s success and everyone will have an opportunity to watch Bullard have his own success next year. Without checking any of the competition for next year I would be willing to bet Bullard is one of the top area rushers for 2009 (1st or 2nd).
When will we see the All County team and the All League teams come out? Didn’t we already have the All County team by this time last year?

Lets be clear Atascadero’s O-line is good and Atascadero’s RB’s are good. And neither would have achieved what they have without the other. Unfortunately the position players get the glory and the line does the work, thats just the way it is, they don’t give MVP’s to offensive lines and that goes from youth ball to the pros.
I think in Atascadero we do have an athlete in Nick Tenhaeff that plays beyond the level of his offensive line, most of his team, and most of his opponents that’s what makes great players. I have seen him play TB, FB, QB, WR, ILB, OLB, DE, and Safety. Atascaderoe’s line does a great job. All successful rushing attacks start with good blocking.
Friday is the true test Moorpark has one of the best run defenses in the Southern section. I heard they have not given up 100 yards rushing all year.

But here’s the question for the guy that likes underage plump boys so much….. where were you last year when Logan Budd was being praised like a god for all HIS success, but nobody ever mentioned anything about the line or anyone else? Oh and how about paso’s fans? they never mention anything about their O-line just a couple of players that make a point here and there…. you must be one of the parents whos kid’s lack of talent is being overshadowed by another with legite talent …. or maybe Atascadero beat your team and it hurt your feelings, but because you can’t argue that your team is better than Atascadero anymore, you attack the kid everyone’s talking about and only because he’s from that Atascadero team that wears ORANGE and grey.
