Cross country runners crowned; football regular-season finales loom large

November 9th, 2009 · 27 Comments

Sterling Bullard

As promised, here’s a look back at some of the best San Luis Obispo County prep sports performances last week:

10. North County Christian running back and linebacker Josh Feld — In his final high school game, Feld had 16 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns, and a touchdown catch, all in the first half of a 66-6 mercy-rule win over Alpaugh. Feld established himself as the Crusaders’ all-time leading receiver, with more than 1,500 yards and 20 scores through the air. He had 182 tackles on the season, as well.

9. Mission Prep quarterback and defensive back Kevin Laird — The senior went 10-of-16 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns with an interception, and added 161 rushing yards and another score on 11 carries in a 42-0 rout of Kings Christian. He also ran back an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

8. Nipomo receiver Kevin Britt — The senior caught eight passes for 155 yards and a touchdown in a 40-6 win over Santa Maria.

7. Paso Robles running back Robbie Burbank — The senior ran for 263 yards and five touchdowns on 41 carries in a 62-7 win over San Luis Obispo.

6. Morro Bay’s running backs — The Pirates’ Bronson Gonzalez ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, while teammate Hylan Lockshaw added 187 yards and two more scores on 15 attempts of his own in a 44-7 win over Cabrillo.

5. Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo golfers Stina Hansson and Alessia Weckenmann — They qualified for the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Northern Individual Regional Championships in the first round Tuesday at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai. The Eagles’ Hansson shot an 80 while the Tigers’ Weckenmann carded an 81. The second round is Thursday at Talega Golf Course in San Clemente.

4. Atascadero running back Sterling Bullard — The senior rushed for 216 yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries in the Greyhounds’ 37-14 statement win over Arroyo Grande.

3. The Arroyo Grande girls volleyball team — The Eagles wrapped up yet another perfect PAC 7 campaign, as they haven’t lost in league play since 2005. Chelsey McKelvy had a combined 13 kills for the well-balanced squad in two matches last week. Arroyo Grande opens the postseason by hosting Saugus at 7 Tuesday night.

2. The San Luis Obispo girls tennis team — How dominant are the Tigers when two sophomores, Abigail Will and Tori Troesch, meet in the PAC 7 singles championship? San Luis Obispo closed out its fifth straight season without suffering a loss in league play.

1. The area’s cross country champions — Nipomo’s Andrew Garcia and San Luis Obispo’s Kathleen Uyttewaal (PAC 7), as well as Morro Bay’s James Shipe and Templeton’s Savannah Camacho (Los Padres League), all claimed individual titles at their respective leagues’ finals. Garcia’s repeat-performance time was 16:03.4, while Uyttewaal crossed in 19:05.8. Shipe won in 15:30, while Camacho paced the field in 18:25.

Did I leave anyone out? Disagree? Have at it.

I plan on answering a mailbag question later this week, but for now, how about some score predictions for Friday night football? I don’t have to tell you playoff implications are all over:

why does everyone think the SLO/St. Joes score is going to be so ridiculous (by 70 points?…) St. Joes is likely going to be resting a LOT of players, while SLO has nothing to lose. St. Joe’s will win handily, but they’re not going to blow them out by 70 points…

-Righetti over AG: 24-21 (RHS takes first league title in a while… best they’ve been since Dickinson left/AG takes 3rd with Paso loss…)
-Atascadero over Paso Robles: 35-17 (Atown may still be underrated, but relatively close game)
-St. Joseph over SLO: 48-14 (not even close- St. Joe’s is without a doubt the best team in the area)
-Nipomo over Templeton: 28-17 (Nipomo convincingly takes 3rd in the LPL/Templeton doesn’t make the playoffs)
-Pioneer Valley over Morro Bay: 42-14 (PV at 9-1 is a little underrated in my opinion. Beat RHS/AG/Nordhoff, lost by a single score to St. Joes…)

The only way Righetti scores more than 17 against AG is if AG plays turnover. The only two AG losses, they have had 4 turnovers in each game, along with key injuries. I know that is part of the game, but if that is what Righetti is counting on, then they shouldn’t be favored. Righetti has been quite lucky with injuries and turnovers. I think AG is the better team. AG 21-10

Paso is being picked by 3 out of 4 so far, yet they have to be considered underdogs. Atascadero is the best team when considering OL and DL (which is the name of the game in HS). Their losses, much like AG’s have been due to their own mistakes. Atascadero 31-24.

SLO and Lompoc aren’t worth looking at.

  • 6 AG excuse list. // Nov 10, 2009 at 2:39 pm

    turrnovers???

Atascadero ran over 200 yards on you. What does that have to do with turnovers?

  • 7 PAC-6 // Nov 10, 2009 at 4:30 pm

If you don’t think turnovers affected the AG / Atascadero game then you weren’t there. Turnovers made that game a blowout. Atascadero still played better and should have won. Atascadero won the battle of the OL and DL. I think they were the better team and they are the top team in the PAC-7. Turnovers aren’t excuses, but they are usually a major factor when they are that lopsided in one team’s favor. I believe Atascadero lost to Righetti due to turnovers as well.

I don’t think Righetti will beat AG unless turnovers are a big factor.

  • 8 Not really turnovers // Nov 10, 2009 at 5:36 pm

I love it when all these whiners and “fans” gripe and moan when they know nothing about how football programs are run. Kelley might be having a bad year (his first year), but you need to give him a couple a seasons to implement his plan. These morons(that is what you are because you comment on what don’t understand) who are calling for a new coach or having the parents get-together (you wanna talk about the blind leading the blind) are just asking for another year of change and instability. Instead, look at what the lower programs are doing at SLO with that trip-option. How are they doing? Bad, good, I don’t know. But that’s a more realistic gauge of where the program is going. Not necessarily this year’s V group.

On top of that, the SLO culture doesn’t help. SLO kids and their parents have always had an attitude of entitlement with a splash of snobby-ness, which doesn’t help in the development of tough kids (which you really DO need for successful football). Think about it. When

–mommy and daddy buy you everything and anything
–you get three meals a day
–you have your own bedroom in a mansion
–you can’t decide between driving the beemer or the rover
–bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, you know SLO folks

Why push yourself or your kid to be better that what they are? You got everything. So they want for nothing. They have no WANT. And those types of kids just don’t make effective football players.

As for the St. Joe game, ef all the St. Joe’s of the world. SLO should do what most teams do to teams like that. Go for it on 4th down and don’t let those bastards get their offensive yards. All of those private schools have made an abomination of competitive HS sports. They should be limited by geography as to where their kids come from. But they don’t. They get their kids from all over the county, North and South. What makes me laugh the most is that those coaches think more of themselves than they actually are. My dead grandma could coach a winning team with an OL 300 pds across. C’mon.

As for Coach Kelley, his program will improve (and it will) and all those who fired on Kelley in this list need to make sure to do a karmic kickback when the winning ways come back.

  • 12 Must_be_related_to_Kelly // Nov 10, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Hmmm. Ok… We will do what you want Mrs Kelly. By the way, your team and coach and kids still suck. Your program is an embaressment to the Central Coast. We will see who is still aroundafter St Joe takes you apart piece by piece and leaves thoses kids wanting to play soccer instead of football next year. . And I bet it won’t be your hubby. You can count on that.

I have watched all 9 AG games this year. The Atown game was without a doubt the worst I have ever seen AG play. (prior 3 years excluded)
It was hard to watch the same team that forced PV to overtimne, shut out Nipomo and beat down PR, then go and loose like that to Atown. I think it was a fluke, and if you watch those 3 other games then watch the Atown game, I think you would agree. I was thinking back to what a surprise it was when Atown lost to Clovis too. Reminds me of that saying: “even Tiger Woods looses sometimes.” No excuses.

  • 14 Oh Sure // Nov 11, 2009 at 8:27 am

Hey! Watch it Just Bein an Athlete! Don’t paint all SLO football players with one broad brush. Most kids on that team show up and work hard every day, don’t drive expensive cars and have parents that don’t put up with an entitled attitude. Yes, there are some entitled prima donnas, every team has those. There are also over-involved parents and those that refuse to believe that their kid might not be the saint they want them to be. Every team has those, too. Its SLO’s first year with a new coach. Give it some time. As I recall the coach at AG had a rough couple of years when he took over, too.

  • 15 Coaching _Tip #3 // Nov 11, 2009 at 11:29 am

I recall the coach at AG had a rough couple of years when he took over but he wasn’t losing 62-7, either,

  • 16 On "Just Bein An Athlete" // Nov 12, 2009 at 3:41 pm

SLO doesn’t have an attitude of entitlement, so that comment must be based on your attitude of resentment.

  • 17 LPLgo // Nov 12, 2009 at 7:57 pm

All I can say is that it was sure suite watching the silence in the SLO stands the night MB took them down 35-10. As it turned out SLO was so week it meant little but it can’t erase that suite feeling. I hear there are some hats being worn by some MB types with a MB football on the front and MB got the gold on the back. By the way, I like coach Kelly he coached my son at MB before going to SLO, good guy, good coach.

  • 18 Must_be_related_to_Kelly // Nov 13, 2009 at 9:39 am

Good coach LPL.go? Not when you can’t win any games in the Pac 7 except Lompoc and am about to be abbreviated by St Joseph and people are crying to please take it easy on there team. Losing 62-7 is not good coaching either but then again, he’s from Morro Bay. Next thing you know, San Luis will want the Cal Poly coach to come in and give a pep talk on how to hang in there with a losing record and give what’s left of your heart to the team.

  • 23 Mr Recruter // Nov 14, 2009 at 12:41 am

Huh? I thought Righetti won? If they did, you did not share the title. But you are going to the playoffs, not like Atascadero who choked it away.

  • 24 A-town is in the playoffs // Nov 14, 2009 at 7:25 am

can anyone on this blog read.
I must have missed something, I thought AG was the PAC-7 champs?
