Obviously, the opening night of CIF-Southern Section playoff action wasn’t too kind to San Luis Obispo County teams.
Atascadero stuck with Buena of Ventura early before giving up a few late scores in a 41-14 defeat, while Arroyo Grande fell 35-7 to a high-octane Camarillo offense.
The PAC 7 tends to get most of the discussion on this blog, it seems, but if you want to keep watching a Southern Section county team, check out Nipomo, which is enjoying the best season in the history of the young program. The Titans have a somewhat favorable matchup against Verbum Dei of Los Angeles on Saturday.
The Titans have nearly 25 more players than Verbum Dei, which isn’t too technically sound, and had one less win coming out of a weaker league. A Nipomo win would mean that next week, the Titans would host a loaded Gardena Serra squad that roughed up Oak Park 54-6.
Nipomo’s offense features the area’s best drop-back quarterback in Josh Correia, an ultra-versatile running back in Eric Penningroth (who has a 4.2 GPA, by the way), a Division I-caliber receiver in Kevin Britt and arguably the area’s best linebacker in Duane Hanna (pictured above).
Meanwhile, Mission Prep will visit Corcoran next week in Central Section play. Royals quarterback/safety/kick returner/Swiss army knife Kevin Laird is truly one of the most underrated players in the area, and is great fun to watch if you can make it out to Corcoran next week. (Entering the Royals’ 13-8 win over Bakersfield Christian on Friday night, Laird led the entire Central Section in interceptions, with 10.)
In any event, the year’s not over yet, but I’d like to thank all of you PAC 7 fans for going along on this ride with me. This has been a strange year compared to recent seasons, in that there wasn’t necessarily one standout team that consistently established itself as the week-in, week-out power above the others. There were, however, four good teams in the league, all of them with very good players, and that should make upcoming all-county selections a great deal of fun.

Yeah, the funny thing with the CIF-Central Section is almost anyone can get in the playoffs. Clovis North is in its first year as a varsity team, didn’t win a single league game and then lost its first-round playoff game. Yes, a team that went 0-for-the-league went to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Paso Robles won three league games and stayed home because there was only room for three teams from its league. Maybe the Central Section needs fewer divisions. The Southern Section has 13 11-man divisions and two eight-man divisions for more than 500 high schools in the section. The Central Section has six 11-man divisions and one eight-man division for 98 high schools. That’s just less than half the divisions, but well under one-fifth the number of schools. There is room for 92 schools in the playoffs, with an eight-team Division IV bracker and a four-team eight-man bracket (out of seven eight-man schools). That means pretty much any school that wants to go to the playoffs could apply and get in.

Bye and Bye you have too much time on your hands. It’s not like MP is another St. Bonaventure and recruits local talent so they can beat the public schools up. MP is made up of students whose parents make a decision to send their children there for a variety of reasons. They are a small school that plays 11 man football in downtown SLO. It’s pretty cool. The reality is the southern section is too big and should be broken up for a variety of reasons, least of which is financial.

The Titans won last night!!! That was such an AWESOME game !!! Nipomo really showed up!!! The whole team got an opportunity to play, even the JV players who were brought up. I agree….A far cry from the 80’s and 90’s. I think the two best teams at the end of the year in the PAC 7 were Paso and Righetti. AG and Atascadero played a weak schedule. Especially, AG….what happened to us playing those good central sections teams, or a bishop amat or Canyon or Valencia??? As a former player and student at AG please play up in competition.
