As most of you seem to have seen by now, Nipomo senior running back Eric Penningroth was named The Tribune’s San Luis Obispo County High School Football Player of the Year on Sunday.
This season, Penningroth (pictured above) accounted for a county-best 2,008 yards from scrimmage (he was also 8-of-16 passing for 86 yards), 17 touchdowns and 13 two-point conversions. The Titans, who had nine others also named to the all-county team (including honorable mentions), were the only PAC 7 or Los Padres League team in the county to win a playoff game, and the only county team from any of its five leagues to host a playoff game after Thanksgiving.
There were a number of great players throughout the county this year, and I hope the all-county selections reflect that. I’ve already been asked a few times when various all-league teams will run, and we typically run those after we get all of them. As of right now, we’re still waiting to receive a few. When we get them, though, I’ll be sure to post them. Thanks again for your patience.

ah we put someone from mission on there, we were doing so good keeping those basketball players out of football…. totally kidding they had a pretty good season . Too many A town kids though they werent that good on defense yet they have lots of kids on there

The tribunes love fest with North county continues. Atascadero had 7 first team spots?
Then they had 5 spots on the second team? Why not just name everyone from Atascadero All County. What type of kolaid were you drinking sir? It’s ok cause nobody takes this papers “All County Team ” seriously anyways.

you must be an AG fan Mad Hatter but i think this all county team is pretty close to being right your probably just mad that Atas took over your 2nd place seed and beat you but the only reason you dont have more people on the county team is because obivously there are better players in the whole county then the players on your team
4 Mad Hatter // Dec 8, 2009 at 11:37 am
Far from the contrary. I’m not a fan of Arroyo Grande or Atascadero. I just find it funny that the Tribure does this every year. Somehow in they’re little world, all they seem to promote is Atascadero and Paso football. As for you, enjoy your short success. After all, didn’t you guys get wiped out by Serra? That’s what I thought. You have no place to talk. Go back to your sand dune boy!. When you guys win a title, then you can talk smack to the rest of the county!

Mad Hatter,
you have it right on! Why should they get so many defensive guys when their d was not that solid this year.
6 Trev // Dec 8, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Atowns D was terrible. AG should have gotten more players.

How come my kids not on the list! He was a 1st team pre-season pick so it doesn’t matter that he got caught with his hand in the browny jar!!

AG took the starters out at halftime for over half the games they played. The stats would of been different had the starters played all 4 qtrs of each game. Lompoc, SLO, San Marcos and Madera played AG’s 2nd string after the 1st half.
Santa Maria played the 2nd string the whole game.

If you guys noticed there individual players at each position. Not a whole defense. The defensive players they listed from A-town are legit. These are individual awards, not team. Do you see any of safeties from atown on the first team? No… because they blew coverages and were the Achilles heal for the defense. The middle was open all day long and smart teams exploited that. Atowns defense was known for poppin you in the mouth and layin hat and the players that were listed were pretty much the only ones who did. im just saying this recognition is for the player himself. No matter how good or how bad the team was or not.

i know you arent trying to give a where are they now saying most of them are at hancock, thats like not having grades to get into a four year and going to a JC instead i mean they are good but come on.

I think the Tribune is right on! Way to go with your picks and Penningroth was deserving of the Player of the Year! Nipomo may not have won a title yet Mad Hatter but that doesn’t mean they don’t have talent! Because they sure so….Just look at both 1st and 2nd team….Nipomo shines! Way to go Titans!!!!!

Its interesting that Atascadero is always under so much scrutiny. The all county list is made by a non-bias source that has probably seen all the teams on the central coast play in person. Also any thoughts on how the past few county players of the year stack up with each other Budd, Tenhaeff, Penningroth?
15 to player // Dec 9, 2009 at 7:16 am
Hancock puts about 15-20 players into a scholarship each year.
“most” High School football players go on to video games after High School. The players at Hancock are out doing Spring, Summer and Fall football at a much Higher then High School level. For Free. These are the TRUE hard nose football players that need to but heads. In fact there are quite a few STRAIGHT “A” students on that team. Don’t tell Gunner that he wasn’t smart enough for a scholarship? That kids rocks. He wasn’t the tallest guy so he got no notice out of High School, not because of grades. He proved himself as Hancock and should be getting a scholarship now.

Overall, I like the Penningroth selection. However, I think the All-County selections weren’t as good as the PAC-7 All League selections. I don’t have them in front of me, but they seemed a little more on target than these All-County selections.
Nipomo should be proud of their season, and should get their bragging in now. Next season will be a real downer for them.

Are we ready for some real football central coast? Come on, it’s ok to think out of the box of Atascadero, Paso, Arroyo Grande, Nipomo, St Joseph.

23 player // Dec 9, 2009 at 5:35 pm
that is a good idea no offense to this guy he does a good job covering all this but the coaches need to do it cuz they know how all the kids played and what not. the only problem is there is like four different leagues that could get difficult cuz the teams dont play eachother
24 Donovan Aird // Dec 9, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Several county coaches were consulted in the all-county selection process, including all three of its Los Padres League coaches and two PAC 7 ones (attempts were made to get input from the two other PAC 7 coaches, but they didn’t get back to me in time, unfortunately). The input was on not only their own players but others’.
We’ve received almost every all-league team, and I will post those soon, as well.
25 Joe Schmo // Dec 9, 2009 at 10:14 pm
No offense, but the All-League selections are what matter the most. Mainly because they are chosen by the coaches who have a better understanding of the game and how good the players really are (or aren’t).
The All-County selections are always nice and interesting to see, though (in my opinion) carry little significance. We locals appreciate the coverage though, Donovan.
26 mad matt // Dec 10, 2009 at 9:51 am
Joe Schmo, I agree.
27 Laa County vs All League // Dec 10, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I’m glad we have both.
ALL LEAGUE seems to be awarded by coaches on pure football skill.
ALL COUNTY can be more then just skill. Such as overall value to the team, leadership as well as football skill.
It would be my guess that All League players would be more likely to continue their football somewhrer after High School. For a lot of these All County players this will be the final big award. They will go on to accomplish other things in life.
Am I wrong? Am I right?

30 Bozo Bob // Dec 10, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Hey Joe Schmo, good point. Another thing is the Top 10 Trib rankings. Why? They mean absolutly nothing. All league, All CIF, All State mean something. That could be why we are getting so much love from down south.
31 Donovan Aird // Dec 10, 2009 at 1:51 pm
As far as I can tell, The Tribune’s all-county selections began in 1980. I’m not entirely sure what the reasoning was for starting the tradition, but I don’t think their intent has ever been to compete with all-league selections. In a sense, they’re different animals.
The all-county picks are merely a tradition, another sort of comprehensive accolade to celebrate local athletes’ accomplishments. I also find them fun to compile and discuss in the sense that multiple leagues are represented.
I was wondering what all of your opinions might be on another idea I have been toying with recently. I’ve noticed a lot of media outlets are taking this opportunity in time to compile “all-decade” teams and lists. Would there be interest in something like that here?
I think it’d be a lot of fun, and perhaps when the time comes (likely over this summer, when things slow down and all the seasons will be over), I’d love to get input from all of you on such teams, if there would be interest. Logan Budd throwing to Jason Holmes? Travis Draper out blocking for Nick Tenhaeff? Jerome Long keeping blockers off of Scott Garrison? And so on.
Anyway, I thought I’d take this opportunity, as well, to list The Tribune’s Players of the Year since 1980:
- – -

1980 David Spurr, Atascadero Sr.
1981 Carlos Adams, Atascadero Sr.

I think a decade’s list would be really interesting to recap on some of the great teams SLO County has had in the past ten years. I mean, AG and SLO probably had their prime in the late 90s, but there’s still a handful of early CIF Champions from the two divisions (X and IV, before the Northern Division was the Pac-7). And regardless of championships, there’s some outstanding players every year.
Compiling the best (or most memorable) from each position would be really interesting to take a look at. Especially with a list of players still active, or already competed at the collegiate-level.
Also a coaching mention might be cool. Ecklund and Huss both went out in the 2000s right?
P.S. Wow, SLO players of the year 01, 02, 03, and 04.

You can dish it out but can’t take it?
Weren’t you the one on here saying things like: I can’t wait to here their excuse after getting beat in the playoffs”…
Let me guess the reason why mighty OC lost:
1. The refs screwed you…
2. Bad play calling?
3. Defense…
…How about young Nick Montana throwing up pick after pick? Yep sounds right, But I guess it is just foreshadowing of him playing QB at UW throwing picks to Mr Woods at USC.
And no, private schools are not normal that is why you Serra, St Joe, Cathedral are all moving up a division next year…and there will be more surprises for you private schools to come in the next couple of years…KARMA will get you.
Also, I believe it is attitude not additude..

I think the tribune was off choosing Pennigrath as the Player of the year. If you look at the All League for the LPAL he was at best the 3rd best running back in the LPAL. Burbank on the other hand was the Back of the Year for the PAC 7. All County shouldn’t be called all county since only Donovan Aird chooses. It should be ALL AIRD TRIBUNE TEAM. If the Tribune wants a TRUE all county team it should ask all of the writers in the county and coaches to vote. I for one think it is a JOKE. As for all of you Nipomo fans you have 1 decent year and you think your the program of the decade! If you can have the constant success like the Morro Bay football program who has won a league championship, went to the semi’s, and seems to reach the quarterfinals every year or an Atascadero program who takes on tough competition and wins league titles you should be humble! Keep popping off and we’ll see where you are after graduating 18 starters!
