PAC 7 announces all-league teams for winter; What would your all-county teams look like?

The PAC 7 on Thursday released its all-league selections for the winter sports seasons. I’ve listed them below. (I also heard today that Los Padres League picks have been made, and should be released soon. So stay tuned for that.) While the immediate list is below, all of the all-league teams will be printed in The Tribune altogether once we have all of them. I’ll do my best to let all of you know the run date for that on our scoreboard (box-scores) page when it becomes available — thanks for your patience.

Be sure to follow the sports section itself, for that matter (also on Twitter), particularly tomorrow. Friday’s Tribune will include previews of Mission Prep’s CIF-Central Section divisional boys and girls basketball championship games, and North County Christian’s girls basketball Southern Section Division 6A final, as well as a preview of the upcoming prep baseball season throughout San Luis Obispo County. (Softball is on the way, as well.)

In the mean time, given that all-league selections are beginning to be sent out, I’d like to ask all of you: What would your all-county basketball teams look like? And who would the Players of the Year be? (We do all-county teams, for which coaches are consulted, for basketball and not other sports because not every school within the county has every non-basketball sport.) As I’ve said before, the all-county teams are never meant to compete with all-league selections. Merely, they’re compiled as an additional means of celebrating local players’ accomplishments. I also find them interesting to discuss because you mix leagues, divisions and levels. For instance, this year, questions might be: Who’s a better point guard — Jordan Hattar or Joe Agbo? What kind of numbers would Kevin Laird be putting up in the PAC 7? How would Josh Feld do in the Los Padres League? And so forth.

In any event, please feel free to comment below, either with your thoughts on the all-league honors or what your all-county boys and girls basketball squads would look like.

How did Paso get 2 first league picks when they were 4th in league? Mcneil made second team and he’s second leading scorer in league. the coachs need to show the reason for the teams and the stats need to back it up this is baloney and not fair to the kids for all the hard work!

  • 2 voleyqueen // Mar 5, 2010 at 11:00 am

Congrats to AGHS for a strong winter season. Congrats to Kate Reinhardt for being named MVP of girls soccer.
Sidenote: I agree w/the 1st comment! Coaches need to print off there maxprep stats and fight for their players! Congrats to the undercalssmen that were honored as well. Howver, I think Ivy Diego (FROSH, Righ) should have been 1st team. Why is it the girls soccer has twice as many picks a boys soccer .. but no Honorable mention. In Basketball I’ve never seen were the League champs don’t get league MVP.

  • 3 hoops805 // Mar 6, 2010 at 11:45 am

Jacob Feld (North County Christian), player of the year. Mike Escobedo, Lonnie Watson, Troy Norris, Kevin Laird, Jordan Hattar first team all county.

  • 4 hoops805 thats a joke right? // Mar 11, 2010 at 3:17 pm

No disrespect but come on. Jacob Feld for POY is a joke right? You really think he can play center over players in the Pac 7 like Quentin Sims, Derrick Beasley and Nick Sauer? They would kill him. Schools like NCC, MP we played them in middle school that’s why they are afraid to step up to the Pac 7. Have you ever watched the games and the talent of who they play its pitiful.

  • 5 Players of year is a no brainer.... // Mar 11, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I’ve taken 2 poll you had on here asking who is best gurad in SLO and the poll to the right should give you your answer to who the best player in the county for boys and girls. Seems to me the people have spoken. I agree with the 1st and 2nd comments too. Another concern how is it you win league and your top player is not the leageue MVP. How do coaches manipulate that? And how is it you are on 2nd team for girls and have a full ride to Cal Poly, yet your stats prove otherwise you should be on 1st team? Whats wrong with these coachs?

  • 6 agree and don't agree // Mar 11, 2010 at 5:07 pm

I can’t go out and say that feld should be player of the year, because I agree the competition he faced was not nearly what the LPL and PAC 7 plays against but with saying that you can’t say that he is a joke and could not compete. I think he could compete and be a good player in both leagues but I know he wouldn’t be scoring 40 points in a game. Same goes with Laird, what I don’t get is is that for the last couple years people have been talking about these stars from NCC like feld putting up 40 in a game and doing this and that so why not schedule a tournament or pre-season games with some LPL or PAC 7 teams? If anything these schools are hurting themselves by getting all this attention, look at Laird for football and the quarterback from last year, when you are scoring 5 to 6 touchdowns a game throwing, running, catching or whatever first off you aren’t that good the teams aren’t or you are that lame to where you want stardom that much. Anyways went a little off topic there so instead of all of us bagging on hoops 805 I would like to hear what other people think for all county teams for basketball?

  • 7 All County Selections... // Mar 13, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Based on the players performance I’ve seen for the entire year and NOT just playoff performance and stats for the players I feel the following for County player of year and 1st and 2nd team and honorable mention is in order as follows.

    All County POY Lonnie Watson-Paso
    1st Team
    Troy Norris-Atascadero,
    Mike Escobedo-AG
    Jeff Mcneil-Nipomo
    Kevin Laird-Mission Prep
    Joe Agbo

    2nd Team
    Matt McOnell-Atas
    Matt McAustin-AG
    Derrick Beasly-AG
    Sean Mullen-SLO
    Jordan Hattar-Templeton

Honorable Mention-Sam McMillan, Kyle Klinesmith, Zach Eggar, Brandon Todd, Josh James, Jon Fish, Casey Erwon, Edward Gilley, Josh Feld.

  • 8 agree and don't agree // Mar 14, 2010 at 10:10 am

I don’t agree with jeff mcneil or kevin laird on first team, and I can’t say that I agree with watson for player of the year. I think at the beginning of the year without the year starting everyone put it between norris, escobedo, and watson. Seen them all play have played against them at one time, I think norris has proved to be better not only on the offensive end but shutting them down on defense. I think overall you had pretty good picks, I think paso should have gotten one more on the list and templeton should have gotten two more

  • 9 .. // Mar 14, 2010 at 12:12 pm

why does every conversation end up with people bagging on mission prep. these are his points for games against teams in this area: Santa Maria 19,Pioneer Valley 11, Templeton 21, Pioneer Valley 17, St. Joes 2. Also Jordan Hattar is extremely overrated.

  • 10 Where did you get your stats from? // Mar 14, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I agree mission preps kevin laird and nipomo jeff mcneil deserve to be on the team and hattar is overated. i found stats on maxprep for norris and watson and looked at slo online for escobedo. i went to to lots of games and tournys and escobedo and watson held the best players whoever they guarded including norris. paso has weak point guards who had trouble the hole season but if watson is on the other teams best player he can hold them like he did when they played in paso and handed them the first league loss. larson didnt even vote for his own players for 2nd team so why would they deserve to be on all county? by no means am i a larson or paso fan but watson is better skilled and more athletic than norris and escobedo by far. as far as thinking paso should have one more on the lst and 2nd team and templeton two more what on earth gives you that idea? you must of bumped your head…list the stats to back up YOUR all county selections if you think mp does not belong on the list because mission prep does deserve to be on the all county team!

  • 11 hoops805 // Mar 14, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Honestly, I’m not joking. Escobedo and Watson are contenders yet I don’t only consider the individual but how his team performed. PR was inconsistent all year and AG faded down the stretch. Watson was fairly consistent and Escobedo faded with his team. Feld and NCC were consistent all year.

  • 12 former mustang // Mar 14, 2010 at 10:16 pm

And how is it you are on 2nd team for girls and have a full ride to Cal Poly

As someone eloquently put…. you can’t coach 6′5″

  • 13 Why did they DUMP you? // Mar 15, 2010 at 6:19 am

I went to Cal Poly and I’m a MUSTANG FOR LIFE. Not a FORMER Mustang.
So what happened? Why are you a former Mustang?
Did you transfer out of the school?

  • 14 I think your should be 807 not 805... // Mar 15, 2010 at 9:29 am

Honestly 805 escobedo and watson are contenders and its not about how the team performed the poll is asking for county player of the year not TEAM of the year you non intelligent back of a mules behind!

maybe paso as a TEAM was not inconsistent all year, but we are talking about the single player. what blog are you looking at? you need to look at stats and his performance watson lead league in points and escobedo helped ag make the second round of cif playoffs. What is it that you dont like about watson and escobedo? did the two tear your son up in ball this year or last year, maybe watson dunked on yoru kid? can you read? escobedo signed for a NAIA to play in college and rumor has it watson will be sigining in april with a d1 during national signing period. Yes Feld was consistent but look who he is playing against, kids that are in 3rd grade and three feet tall…let him play against escobedo, watson and norris and then see what happens he will have 3 points, maybe and norris, watson, and escobedo alone could probably score in the high 70’s on north county christain.

  • 15 Donovan Aird // Mar 15, 2010 at 4:19 pm

    Everyone, thanks for the interest.

I just wanted to say here that all three local leagues’ all-league teams (PAC 7, Los Padres and Coast Valley) will run in print in tomorrow’s Tribune.

    Thanks again,
    Donovan

  • 16 hoops805 // Mar 15, 2010 at 7:54 pm

You make a good argument, but you don’t need to try to insult me. I must have really hit a nerve for you to be so uncivil. In my opinion basketball is a team sport and the county player of the year should have individual stats as well as reflect his team. I won’t go into the deficiencies of Watson and Escobedo, I’ll just leave it that Feld and his team had as good a year as either of them.

  • 17 Ahsha Wilson // Mar 15, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Not to discredit Watson or Escobedo, I think they are great players, however they had alot of help from their teammates, while Norris did not have much of a team and still was able to have great games. In the tournaments and in the playoffs he was consistant. I mean really when one person scores 23 points and the ending score was 39 for his team that says alot. Watson better skilled than Escobedo and Norris, well that is a matter of opinion and you know what they say about opinions. Norris did a good job on Watson in the Paso/Atascadero game picked him quite a few times but thats part of the game. They are different types of players, Watson plays with finesse and Escobedo and Norris play more intense. My vote would be for Norris again he did not have much help.

  • 18 A town did have a TEAM! // Mar 17, 2010 at 10:52 am

I am like most on the blog and am not a fan of larson or paso. but watson should be player of the year and I base my vote on his individual performance play the entire year, he’s naturally talented in all areas of the game you just have to give it to him hes talented. I played against him and he is a good player, one of the best around.

I dont know why you said Norris did not have have help. He did have help all year long on our team he was in foul trouble alot and sat the bench and who picked up the slack our team did, Mcconnel, Mcmillan and Mislosvsky all of us helped. hes good but not at the level of watson yet. watson had a little help when he was not in the game and his team could rarely score. paso was without hayes for the first four or five games due to suspension and they had trouble beating teams early on. when he did come back he was rusty and gettin burned the rest of the season and we tore hayes up with our threes and burned the paso guards, ha, ha, ha.

  • 19 Who are the Senior All Stars? // Mar 18, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Donovan, Where are the rosters and who was selected to play on the SLO county teams for the senior all star basketball kiwanis spectacular game down in santa maria?

  • 20 A. Wilson // Mar 21, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I did not mean to offend when I said Norris did not have much of a team, because I do not take anything away from Oconnell, or Mcmillan but it just wasn’t consistent help. I disagree that the slack was picked up because it is a team effort and it is what you are supposed to do as a team and Oconnell was very team oriented. Watson to me had a lot of help and I take nothing away from him either, I just think they play different and even though the comment above speaks solely on Watson and Norris, Escobedo is just as good. You do not have to bash Norris he did not say anything I did. Even in foul trouble his presence was still very known when he came back in the game. If you are upset about this comment, wasn’t trying to offend anyone it is just what I and some others think so to answer your question on why I said Norris did not have alot of help, it is what I saw when I went to the games, MY BAD.

  • 21 To Troy Norris Aunt Ahsa Jones Wilson... // Mar 24, 2010 at 5:46 pm

To aunt Asha Jones-Wilson who is Troy Norris aunt, you may not have meant to offend anyone when you said your nephew Norris did not have much of a team and to say it just wasn’t consistent help is wrong. Did you even come up from westchester to one of the games? I dont believe you did. To say Escobedo and Watson had a lot of help and you take nothing away from them either is wrong as well, especially since rumor has it you never went to a ag or paso high game either. Watson was putting up 20 points a game and that started early on in season it didnt start at the end. He averaged almost 20 at end of season for 2 years in a row. nobodys bashing norris they are saying he’s not a player of the year this year maybe next year. and yes several people were upset about the comment you made. and when exactly did you see that he did not have alot of help, when you went to the games, which ones? Other players on the team were scoring points when he had games of 8, 10, point games. He did not average in the 20’s consistently that is why his average is under 15. Not to be disrespectful to you as his aunt but dont bash on us to try and make em look good when hes above average and the team helped make em look good. Yes hes quik and stole the ball but hes no complete package superstar worthy of player of year. and we never saw a dunk and he wasnt blocking stuff. if so we missed it, post it for us to see.

Hey guys I think everybody on Atascadero and all the other teams did good. Don’t get mad at one opinion it’s his aunt she is just being partial. That is definately not how Troy feels, I know he is my son. He loves his team and doesn’t want them bashed. Its her opinion we cant change it, believe me I have tried. But Troy doesn’t deserve all the negative comments he is not saying anything and again does not condone any of what my sister has said. Thanks guys.
