Norris, Raubinger compete among elite

July 26th, 2010 · 1 Comment

An additional duo of San Luis Obispo County prep stars poised for possibly dominant senior years are also enjoying successful summers.

Atascadero basketball standout Troy Norris has spent the past week in Las Vegas playing at the adidas Super 64 AAU tournament for Organized Chaos, a 17-and-under San Joaquin Valley-based club. On Sunday, NBEBasketball.com called Norris a “tough guard” to cover for an opposing club and “quick on the dribble.” Earlier this summer, following the San Jose-area Rumble in the Bay, HoopReview.net listed Norris as one of the top college prospects at the event. The publication evaluated Norris as a “real athletic (point guard) with speed to burn” who “handles it, excels in transition, sees the floor well” and is a “good driver” with “high energy.” According to the article, Norris had a “coming-out party” at the event and “is now on the Division I radar.”

As a junior, the 5-foot-10 Norris was an all-CIF Southern Section Division 4AA first-team honoree. He was also named The Tribune’s county player of the year after posting 16.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game while lifting the Greyhounds to the divisional quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Arroyo Grande baseball standout Kyle Raubinger, the reigning PAC 7 Most Valuable Pitcher and an all-county first-team pick, was recently chosen to compete at the prestigious Area Code Games, a five-day national prep showcase taking place Aug. 5-10 in Long Beach. (Raubinger will play for the Milwaukee Brewers’ blue squad.)

This past season, the 6-2, 190-pound Raubinger was an all-Division 2 second-team selection, batting .417 with 30 RBI and five homers, while also pitching for a 1.78 ERA through 59 frames.

Elsewhere of late, in case you missed it, I’d be curious to get your thoughts on the following:

Lucas Kephart, a 2008 Arroyo Grande grad who spent the past two years playing baseball at Sacramento City College, has signed with the University of Texas. Kephart, who had also previously honed his hitting with the California Wahoos summer program, collected 91 RBI playing for the Eagles, and picked up all-county accolades his final three seasons.

After a productive 2009 campaign for Sacramento City, the more well rounded Kephart opened this past season having to overcome a severe case of pneumonia. He went on to be named the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and recently impressed Longhorns assistant coach Tommy Harmon in a workout with the Wahoos.

• Former Arroyo Grande offensive line standout Mark Lewis, who went on to star at Oregon and is now a member of the St. Louis Rams, returned to the Central Coast to help out at an offensive line camp attended by nearly 60 youths.

• In a move that will surely apply to local prep girls basketball hopefuls, Cuesta College men’s assistant Ron Barba, the formerly richly successful coach of the St. Joseph girls squad, was named the head coach of the Cougars’ women’s program.

• Speaking of Cuesta basketball, the Cougars men’s team has landed three standouts with local ties heading into next season. In addition to 6-7 Righetti center Nick Sauer, the PAC 7 MVP and leading scorer, Cuesta will welcome recently graduated Atascadero sharpshooting two-guard Matt O’Connell and 2009 San Luis Obispo alumnus Shane Kennedy, a 6-6 power forward who spent this past year redshirting at Division II San Francisco State.

• Former Atascadero boys water polo star Karl Weit has signed with UC San Diego via Cuesta College, the school announced.

I just thought you might want to know why you don’t get many reponses. It’s probably because of the page error.
